The municipality of Calvià raised its 15 Q Flags for Tourist Quality this Friday, certifying the excellence of its beaches. With this achievement, it consolidates its position as the third municipality in Spain and the first in the Balearics in terms of distinctions.

The official ceremony for raising the Q Flags for Tourist Quality in Calvià took place this Friday at Buguenvil·lia beach, attended by the mayor Juan Antonio Amengual, the deputy mayor for Tourism, Beaches and Coast, Elisa Monserrat, and the area councillor for Cas Català, Esperanza Catalá. Representatives from the beach concession companies, as well as from the business associations CAEB and PIMEM-Restauració, were also present.

With this raising, Calvià officially ratifies the renewal of its 15 Q Flags for Tourist Quality, an achievement that places the municipality once again on the national podium as the third municipality in Spain and the first in the Balearics with the highest number of such distinctions. These flags were received last June from the hands of the general director of the Institute for Spanish Tourist Quality and Sustainability (ICTES), Fernando Fraile.

A rigorous certification process

To obtain the Q Flag for Tourist Quality, Calvià's beaches had to pass a rigorous process verified by independent auditors, ensuring compliance with the international quality standard UNE-ISO 13009, agreed upon by a hundred countries. This standard guarantees the highest quality in service provision and the proper management of public facilities, including cleanliness and selective waste collection, safety devices, rescue and first aid, tourist information services, access to bathing areas, hygiene services, and leisure establishments, among others.

The 15 certified beaches are: Buguenvil·lia, Illetes spa, Cala Contesa, Portals Nous, S'Oratori, Es Carregador, Palmanova, Son Maties, Magaluf, Cala Vinyes, Ses Penyes Rotges (El Toro), Santa Ponça, and La Romana, Torà and Palmira, the last three in Peguera. For the residents of Calvià, this means a daily guarantee that their coastline is maintained in optimal conditions, with quality services at their doorstep.

Recognition of joint efforts

During the event, Mayor Juan Antonio Amengual highlighted the collective effort of the municipality to maintain this national leadership. "Renewing these 15 flags demonstrates our commitment to excellence. Ultimately, this involves control, monitoring, and work regarding the quality of services on our urban beaches. To be consolidated as the first municipality in the Balearics and the third in Spain is a pride that reflects that our beaches offer services that meet the highest standards of excellence," he stated.

For her part, Elisa Monserrat emphasized the technical work behind these distinctions: "Behind each Q Flag of Quality that begins to fly today, there is silent work throughout the year. Passing the audits requires us to maintain the highest level of cleanliness, accessibility, and safety. Our goal is for residents and tourists to have absolute peace of mind knowing they are in an optimally managed environment."

Esperanza Català underscored the importance of the award for the Cas Català area: "It is an honour that this year's central flag-raising event is held here, at Buguenvil·lia beach. For the Cas Català area, having this certification is not only a magnificent tourist attraction but also a daily guarantee that our residents enjoy a cared-for, accessible coastline with the best services at their doorstep."

The ICTES, Institute for Spanish Tourist Quality and Sustainability, is a business association that represents all subsectors of Spanish tourism and has already surpassed a quarter of a century in existence. It is represented in its governing bodies by the Ministry of Tourism, the autonomous communities, and municipalities and provinces through the FEMP.

With this raising, Calvià not only reinforces its tourist appeal but also offers its residents the peace of mind of having beaches that meet the highest quality standards. The next time a resident or tourist steps onto the sand of any of these 15 beaches, they will know that the flag flying is not just an ornament but the result of constant work throughout the year.
