The President of the Government will meet with the Balearic President at 17:30 at the Consolat de Mar and later with the monarch at the Almudaina.
The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, will hold two key institutional meetings in Palma this Wednesday: first with the President of the Balearic Govern, Marga Prohens, and subsequently with King Felipe VI. The meeting with Prohens will take place at 17:30 at the Consolat de Mar, the headquarters of the regional Executive.
This will be the fourth summer meeting between the two leaders, who have taken advantage of Sánchez's trips to Mallorca to meet with the monarch. The previous meetings have been marked by political differences, especially on issues such as housing, regional funding, and immigration.
Prohens has already indicated that she is attending without expectations that Sánchez will address her demands. “I am going to ask him for what I have been asking for three years in the conferences of presidents and in meetings both at the Consolat and in Moncloa. I will ask him for the fulfilment of a Balearic agenda that he knows, although I will hand it to him again. Let's see if by providing copies I can get him to commit to something,” she declared after meeting with the King last Friday.
The leader of the Balearic PP plans to address the housing access crisis, particularly pressing in the Balearics, where some of the highest prices in Spain are recorded. She will also discuss the new regional funding system, currently under processing, and the management of migratory flows, in light of the notable increase in the arrival of boats to the archipelago.
Prohens will also ask Sánchez to “stop punishing us.” “What have we done for the citizens of Catalonia to have over 2,000 euros forgiven and those in the Balearics 1,400? What have we done for millions to be invested in trains in Catalonia while we have been demanding a road agreement and another for railways for three years? What have we done to Sánchez?” she questioned.
After the meeting with Prohens, the Balearic President is expected to hold a press conference to explain the content of the meeting and answer questions from journalists. Sánchez will do the same after his meeting with the King.
This year's traditional summer meeting with the monarch will take place at the Royal Palace of Almudaina at 18:30. Unlike other years, it will not be at Marivent. After the meeting, about which details are usually not disclosed, Sánchez will address the media, presumably at 19:30. As a rule, the president answers three questions: two on national matters and one about the Balearics.
These meetings occur in a context of political tension between the central Government and the Balearic Executive, governed by the PP. Prohens' agenda of demands also includes the cancellation of regional debt, an issue that has generated controversy due to the differential treatment of Catalonia.
For the citizens of Mallorca, the meeting may have direct consequences on the funding of public services, investment in infrastructure, or housing policies. Prohens' appearance after the meeting will be key to knowing if she achieves any progress on her demands.
