The monarch and the head of government hold their traditional summer meeting in the Balearic capital this Wednesday, with the wildfires in the western Sierra of Madrid as the central theme.
King Felipe VI and the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, are holding their annual working meeting this Wednesday at the Palace of Almudaina in Palma, a meeting that takes on special significance following the devastating wildfires that have affected several Spanish provinces in recent days.
The meeting, which takes place during the Royal Family's summer stay in Mallorca, comes after the monarch returned from Peru, where he attended the inauguration of the new president, Keiko Fujimori. Sánchez, for his part, arrives at the meeting after assessing the political course this Monday, in which he already highlighted the need for a state pact against climate change.
According to sources from the Royal Household, the meeting will likely focus on the situation of the wildfires that have ravaged areas of the western Sierra of Madrid, a matter that led the king and Queen Letizia to visit those displaced by the fire housed in the La Chopera sports centre in Villamanta last Sunday.
The meeting in Palma will be Sánchez's last official act before starting his holidays, which he will largely enjoy at the La Mareta residence in Lanzarote. The president is expected to return to activity on 25 August with the first meeting of the Council of Ministers after the summer break.
For the residents of Mallorca, the presence of the king and the president on the island represents a reinforcement of security and an increase in institutional activity in the Balearic capital. The meeting, which is held behind closed doors, will not affect traffic or daily life in central Palma, although it is recommended to avoid the area around the Palace of Almudaina during the hours of the meeting.
Felipe VI began his official agenda in Mallorca on 24 July with traditional audiences with local authorities, including the president of the Balearic Government, Marga Prohens; the president of the Parliament, Gabriel Le Senne; the mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez; and the president of the Council of Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés.
Additionally, Queen Letizia is scheduled to close the Atlàntida Mallorca Film Fest next Sunday, which this year celebrates its sixteenth edition, an event that adds to the official agenda of the Royal Family on the island.
The meeting between the king and the president takes place in a context of climate emergency, with wildfires causing significant material and environmental damage. Sánchez has already expressed his willingness to promote a state pact against climate change, an initiative that could take shape after the summer.
The meeting at Almudaina is the first of its kind to be held in 2026, after last year's was cancelled due to the president's schedule coinciding with the NATO summit. On this occasion, both leaders wanted to maintain the tradition, which dates back decades.
