Evan, a minor with intellectual disabilities, disappeared while having dinner with his family at a restaurant in Portocolom. Hours later, he was found soaked but unharmed, thanks to a large search operation.
Saturday night turned into a distressing search in Portocolom, when Evan, a 10-year-old boy with intellectual disabilities, vanished while dining with his parents and some friends at a local restaurant. His parents, Erwann and Eva, immediately alerted the Local Police, who activated a search operation involving officers, firefighters, and numerous locals.
“We were terrified, but what happened in Portocolom during the hours following his disappearance was extraordinary,” the parents recounted in a thank-you message shared by the Ajuntament de Felanitx. “We received an immense show of solidarity; an entire community joined our efforts and those of our friends; and that community was you, the residents of Portocolom.”
Evan, who does not speak and swims with difficulty, could have followed anyone, his parents explained. The mobilization was immediate: residents of all ages joined the search on foot, by bicycle, motorbike, or car, while exchanging calls and messages to expand the search area.
“On every street we passed, we encountered the worried looks of people who seemed to share our anguish, inspecting every corner of the night with the light of their phones, as if Evan were their own child,” the parents added.
Hours later, the boy was found soaked “from head to toe,” but “perfectly fine,” according to his parents. “Our happiness was indescribable,” they expressed. Erwann and Eva wanted to extend their gratitude to all those involved in the search, including officers, firefighters, and anonymous volunteers.
“We never thought we would have to go through such a difficult ordeal, but experiencing it with all of you by our side made it one of the most moving experiences of our lives,” they concluded in their thank-you letter.
The Ajuntament de Felanitx, which includes Portocolom, shared the parents' message on its social media along with a photograph of the boy, highlighting the swift and supportive response from the community. The council has not provided further details about the circumstances of the disappearance or the child's current condition, although the parents assure that he is well.
Evan's disappearance, although brief, mobilized an entire town that dedicated itself to his search. The rapid action of emergency services and citizen collaboration were key to the boy being found safe and sound within hours.
This incident highlights the importance of coordination between residents and authorities in emergency situations, especially when minors with special needs are involved. The experience, despite the initial distress, has left a sense of gratitude in Evan's family, who now appreciate their community's support more than ever.
