The mayor of Esporles, Josep Ferrà (Més per Mallorca), has announced fines of up to €2,500 for residents of the Ses Rotgetes urbanisation who consume more than 340 litres of water per day per household, a measure that has caused discontent among the residents.

The Town Hall of Esporles has proposed a financial penalty of €2,500 for residents of the Ses Rotgetes and Jardín de Flores urbanisations who exceed the established water consumption limit of 340 litres per day per household meter. The measure, announced by Mayor Josep Ferrà, aims to curb excessive consumption in an area that has faced supply issues for years.

The average daily consumption per inhabitant in the Balearic Islands is 136 litres, according to data from the Government, which means that the limit set by the Town Hall will force families to adjust their spending based on the number of residents in each household. Those who repeatedly fail to comply face not only the fine but also the temporary suspension of supply.

Residents report prolonged cuts and lack of infrastructure

Residents of Ses Rotgetes have been complaining for years about frequent water cuts affecting their daily lives. The situation has worsened in recent months, especially since May, when demand increased and the second supply well planned by the Town Hall has yet to be operational. This infrastructure, crucial for ensuring supply in the urbanisations, is pending administrative approvals that are delayed.

The coordinator of Vox in Esporles, José Villanueva, has harshly criticized Mayor Ferrà's management. According to Villanueva, the only solution offered by the Town Hall to residents is to hire water trucks on their own, bearing a financial cost that the Town Hall does not even commit to reimbursing. "It is an absolute absurdity and a sign of the institutional neglect they are subjected to," he stated.

Vox supports residents' legal action

Vox has expressed its support for the residents of Ses Rotgetes, who have decided to take the Town Hall to court due to the lack of effective solutions. "When residents are forced to sue their own Town Hall to demand something as basic as water, it means the governing team has failed spectacularly in its main obligation: to meet the needs of its citizens," Villanueva pointed out.

The Vox spokesperson reminded that Ses Rotgetes is an urban area whose residents pay their taxes like any other citizen of Esporles, making it unacceptable that in the 21st century there are families living with the uncertainty of not knowing if they will have enough water to meet their daily needs. Josep Ferrà's management, according to Villanueva, "is a reflection of a municipal government more concerned with its ideological and separatist obsessions than with solving the real problems of the residents."

Meanwhile, those affected are awaiting a judicial response that will compel the Town Hall to promote the construction of the new well and ensure a stable supply. The €2,500 fine, far from calming tensions, has further ignited residents' protests.
