Designer Sybilla lands at Espai Buit in Palma with an exhibition dedicated to French painter Jean Bouvier. The show, titled 'Painting in Silence', invites slow contemplation.

Designer Sybilla inaugurates this month at Espai Buit in Palma the exhibition Painting in Silence, a show dedicated to French painter Jean Bouvier. The proposal, curated by Sybilla herself, brings together a selection of works that the artist created outside the art market, in the silence of his Parisian attic.

The exhibition comes after Sybilla opened her gallery Plaza del Gato in Madrid, a space she defines as "a place of freedom" and which she now extends to Mallorca. "For years I have shown my clothing here and this time I return with the gallery project to share the work of a painter who moves me," the designer explained during the presentation.

A chance discovery in Paris

Sybilla discovered Jean Bouvier's work by chance while strolling through Paris with her partner, Andrés Serra. "We entered an antique bookstore and saw a painting that caught my attention. The bookseller explained to us that it was the work of his father," she recounted. The visit to the attic where all the painter's works were kept captivated her immediately.

"His painting connects with me through the colour, the sensitivity, and his way of looking at the world," Sybilla stated. Some time later, upon opening Plaza del Gato, she proposed to the artist's children to organise this exhibition. "What brought me the most joy was seeing that other people were moved when discovering his work, just as I was," she added.

Contemplation as resistance

The show is titled Painting in Silence, a concept that was essential for Bouvier. The artist requested silence to paint and also to contemplate his own work. "He understood silence as the absence of the need to explain," Sybilla noted. In a world dominated by immediacy, the designer believes that taking time for oneself "is one of the greatest luxuries today."

The exhibition includes both paintings and sketchbooks by Bouvier. "Through them, one can appreciate how he drew from everything he saw and tried to transfer that light and beauty to the canvas. He never stopped pursuing that quest," Sybilla highlighted.

For the residents of Palma, the exhibition is an opportunity to discover an unknown painter on the island. Espai Buit, a serene space in the city centre, thus becomes a refuge for contemplation. The exhibition will be open until the end of the year, with free admission.
