The Mallorcan chain Hiper Centro will inaugurate a new supermarket in Sóller on July 17, bringing its total to 26 stores in the Balearics. The opening coincides with its 40th anniversary, which began in Manacor in 1985.
Hiper Centro, the supermarket chain born in Manacor, continues to expand across Mallorca. On July 17, it will open the doors of its new establishment in Sóller, on Manuel de Carrascosa García Ferrer street, s/n. This will be its 26th store in the Balearics and comes just as the company celebrates 40 years of history in the islands.
The new supermarket will have extended hours: from 8:30 to 21:00 Monday to Saturday, and Sundays from 8:30 to 14:00. This is good news for the residents of Sóller, who gain a point of sale with local and zero-kilometre products, the hallmark of the brand.
From Manacor to all of the Balearics: 40 years of growth
The story of Hiper Centro began in 1985, when several families from Manacor decided to join forces. They closed their individual businesses and bet on a new store model that promoted Mallorcan products. A year later, they opened the first Hiper Centro in that locality. That philosophy of supporting local producers is still alive today: the chain prioritises varieties from the island and works with nearby suppliers.
The second supermarket opened in Cala Millor, and from there the expansion did not stop: Felanitx (1989), Inca (1990), s'Illot (1992) and Xim's (1993). In 1994, the chain expanded to Ibiza and in 2001 to Menorca. Today, Hiper Centro has more than 25 active stores and employs over a thousand workers.
Innovation and commitment to local products
In 2004, the company launched a new concept in Manacor: Es Brico, a store dedicated to DIY. In 2013, it joined the IFA/Eliges brand, which coexists with manufacturer brands on its shelves. Digitalisation also arrived: in 2016 it launched Tu Hiper Ibiza, its online shopping platform, and in 2020 it launched D'aquí, an initiative to promote Balearic products in collaboration with chef Miquel Calent.
With the opening in Sóller, Hiper Centro strengthens its presence in the Serra de Tramuntana. Customers in the area will be able to enjoy a selection that prioritises Mallorcan products, from seasonal fruits and vegetables to artisanal cured meats and cheeses. The chain, true to its origins, demonstrates that it is possible to grow without losing local essence. And it celebrates this with a new store opening just as it blows out 40 candles.
