Agents from Seprona have investigated three men on a property in Campanet where they found 530 fighting cocks, 70 of them with injuries from clandestine fights.
Agents from the Nature Protection Service (Seprona) of the Civil Guard have dismantled an organization dedicated to illegal cockfighting on a rustic property in the Mallorcan municipality of Campanet. The operation resulted in the investigation of three men for alleged animal abuse and illegal veterinary practice.
The investigation began after receiving information about clandestine activities on the property. With the support of the Canine Service, the agents inspected the premises and found 530 birds of the Spanish Combatant breed, of which 70 showed wounds and mutilations indicating their use in illegal fights.
Inside the property, the agents located a fighting ring showing signs of regular use, as well as numerous individual and shared cages intended for breeding and maintaining the birds. They also discovered two rooms where veterinary medicines and surgical materials were stored.
According to sources from the investigation, the suspects were treating the cocks without any qualifications. Among the practices detected were the mutilation of combs and wattles, the replacement of spurs, and the treatment of wounds caused during fights.
The agents seized the 70 cocks that showed obvious signs of abuse, as well as all the medicines and surgical tools used. The operation remains open and further actions against other individuals involved are not ruled out.
Cockfighting is prohibited in Spain under the Animal Protection Law, which punishes abuse with prison sentences of up to 18 months. In the Balearic Islands, regional regulations also sanction these practices. Residents of Campanet and other rural areas of Mallorca can report suspicious activities through the Civil Guard's phone number 062.
The Civil Guard reminds that animal abuse is a crime defined in Article 337 of the Penal Code and encourages citizens to collaborate in eradicating these illegal practices.
