The Govern will allow the free circulation of motorcycles, mopeds and bicycles in the restricted areas of the Serra de Tramuntana on August 12, while cars will have to justify their journey.
Motorcycles, mopeds and bicycles will be able to circulate without any prohibition in the areas of the Serra de Tramuntana where traffic restrictions will be established due to the total solar eclipse on August 12. This has been confirmed by the Balearic Govern in the FAQ section of the special mobility operation designed for the day.
The two-wheeled vehicles thus become the great exception to the security device, which foresees access controls on the Ma-10 road, from Andratx to Pollença, and on other roads leading to viewpoints, coves and strategic points for observing the astronomical phenomenon. Among the most sought-after locations are Sant Elm, Playa de Palma, the Santuari de Cura, Sant Salvador and the lighthouse of ses Salines.
While car drivers will have to justify the reason for their journey to pass through the controls, users of motorcycles, mopeds and bicycles will be able to access freely, without the need to present any accreditation. This measure aims to facilitate the mobility of those who choose these means of transport, which generate less congestion and have a lower environmental impact.
The special operation responds to the expectation of a large influx of visitors and residents who will want to witness the total solar eclipse, an event that will not be repeated on the island for several years. The restrictions will be concentrated on the roads of the Serra de Tramuntana, declared a World Heritage Site, to avoid overcrowding and ensure road safety.
Residents in the affected areas will also be able to access with their vehicle, although they will have to prove their residence with their ID or resident certificate. Those who have a second home in those areas will be able to pass the controls by presenting documentation that proves ownership, such as a copy of the deed, a utility bill or the receipt for the Property Tax (IBI) in the name of the persons wishing to access.
Additionally, workers from hotels, restaurants and other establishments located in the restricted areas will be able to enter as long as they prove their employment relationship with a contract, a certificate from the company or a payslip. The Govern has published these clarifications to address the most common questions about the operation.
The regional administration reminds the importance of using only glasses that comply with the ISO 12312-2 standard to observe the eclipse, in order to avoid irreversible eye damage. It is recommended to purchase them in advance, as high demand is expected.
The mobility device will be active throughout the day on August 12, with dynamic controls depending on the influx. Citizens are advised to plan their journeys in advance and check updates on the official channels of the Govern.
