All political groups will support the transfer of the Son Llàtzer Vell plot to the Government. The measure, which will be voted on Thursday, unlocks the construction of the institute, a community demand for over 30 years.
The Palma City Council will transfer the land where the future IES Son Ferriol will be built to the Balearic Government, a project long awaited by the local residents. The plot, known as Son Llàtzer Vell, will be handed over to the Ministry of Education following the municipal plenary vote next Thursday, where unanimous support from all political groups is expected.
The transfer of ownership of the land is an essential administrative procedure for the Government to begin construction of the institute. The planned investment for the educational centre amounts to around 20 million euros, according to the preliminary project presented about a year ago.
The demand for a secondary school in Son Ferriol dates back over three decades. Students from the neighbourhood have had to travel to other municipalities or areas of Palma to attend Secondary Education, a situation that residents have repeatedly complained about.
The school council and the parents' associations have supported the initiative, which they consider a priority to prevent uprooting and facilitate family reconciliation. The location of the new centre, on a plot owned by the municipality, has been a key point in the negotiations between Cort and the Government.
With the transfer of the land, the Ministry of Education will be able to tender the project and the works, which are estimated to take several years to complete. IES Son Ferriol will have classrooms for Secondary and Baccalaureate, as well as common areas and sports zones.
The Mayor of Palma has highlighted that the agreement is the result of dialogue between administrations and has thanked the collaboration of all municipal groups. For her part, the Minister of Education has stated that the centre addresses a historical need and that the Government remains committed to improving educational infrastructure.
The residents of Son Ferriol have expressed their satisfaction with the progress, although they remind that the process is still long. The residents' association has requested speed in the procedures so that the works can begin as soon as possible.
The plenary session next Thursday will give the green light to the transfer, a step that adds to other recent milestones, such as the approval of the preliminary project and the budget allocation. Once the plot is transferred, the Government will need to draft the executive project and put the works out to tender.
The new institute will allow young people from Son Ferriol to study close to home, avoiding travel and improving the educational offer in the area. The construction of the centre will also generate employment during the construction phase and invigorate the neighbourhood.
The City Council hopes that political unanimity will be maintained throughout the process, thus ensuring the continuity of the project. IES Son Ferriol joins other planned educational infrastructures in Palma, such as the expansion of several schools.
