The municipal party Seny i Sentit has raised concerns about the proliferation of rats in several areas of Sóller due to the deterioration of waste containers. Spokesperson Marga Mora demands the urgent replacement of the broken bins.
The political party Seny i Sentit has focused on the state of rubbish bins in Sóller, which, they claim, are in poor condition and are causing a serious public health issue. The party's deputy spokesperson, Marga Mora, has pointed out that in recent months there has been a worrying increase in the presence of rats in various streets of the municipality, directly attributed to the broken containers that allow waste to spill onto the ground.
“Rats have proliferated alarmingly in many areas,” Mora stated, explaining that the broken bins drop food scraps and liquids, generating foul odours and attracting these rodents. The party is calling on the Town Hall to act immediately and proceed with the replacement of all non-sealed containers to prevent the situation from worsening with the arrival of heat, when infestations and odours intensify.
One of the most recent incidents reported by Seny occurred on Bunyola Street, in the Es Través urbanisation. According to Mora, a refuse container broke, and the Council replaced it with a yellow one, intended exclusively for lightweight packaging. This decision, made without prior notice or explanation to the residents, has caused confusion and discontent among locals, who have found it difficult to properly separate their waste at source.
“You cannot replace a refuse container with one for packaging without informing the people. This only leads to residents not knowing where to throw each item, resulting in everything getting mixed up,” the spokesperson criticised. The party has requested a complete review of the state of all waste collection points in the municipality and urgent action to prevent the situation from continuing to deteriorate.
The problem of deteriorated containers is not new in Sóller, but Seny claims it has worsened in recent months. The lack of maintenance and the age of many containers are causing breakages to become increasingly frequent, forcing residents to live with the dirt and inconveniences they create. The party has urged the municipal government to prioritise this issue and allocate the necessary resources to ensure public health on the streets.
Meanwhile, residents of the Es Través urbanisation and other affected areas are awaiting a response from the Town Hall, which has yet to comment on the complaints. Seny has warned that if measures are not taken, the rat infestation could spread to more neighbourhoods and become a larger health problem, especially during the summer months when high temperatures favour the reproduction of rodents.
The party has called on the Council's responsibility to act swiftly and prevent the residents of Sóller from having to continue enduring a situation they consider unhealthy. “We are not asking for anything extraordinary, just that the obligation to keep the containers in good condition is fulfilled so that the city is livable,” Mora concluded.
