Agents from the Local Police of Palma have closed the Gurudwara Singh Sabha, on Francesc Pi i Margall street, for lacking the necessary administrative permit for its operation. The temple, a reference for the Sikh community in Mallorca, will remain closed until its situation is regularised.

The Sikh temple Gurudwara Singh Sabha, located in the Pere Garau neighbourhood of Palma, has been sealed by the Local Police of Palma. The reason: lack of the enabling title that authorises its activity. Municipal sources confirmed that the closure occurred after verifying the absence of this administrative document, required for any public-use venue.

The sealing means the temporary suspension of all activities that were held in the building on Francesc Pi i Margall street. These included religious ceremonies, collective prayers, and social gatherings that brought together dozens of worshippers each week. The Sikh community of Palma, which has about 4,000 members across Mallorca, thus sees one of its main meeting points interrupted.

A temple with more than a decade of history

The Gurudwara Singh Sabha opened its doors more than ten years ago and had established itself as a spiritual and cultural reference for Sikhs on the island. Its facilities hosted everything from religious ceremonies to events open to the neighbourhood, promoting coexistence and understanding of this faith. The Sikh community, originally from Punjab (India), practices Sikhism, the fifth largest religion in the world, based on equality, honesty, and service to others.

In recent years, part of the activity had moved to another temple in the Son Castelló industrial estate, but the one in Pere Garau remained the most emblematic for the faithful. Its closure has caused discontent among community members, who hope to regularise the situation as soon as possible.

Reopening conditional on obtaining the permit

The Palma City Council has not specified the timelines for reopening. This is contingent on the temple's management proving compliance with the requirements and obtaining the enabling title. In the meantime, the venue will remain sealed and unusable. Worshippers wishing to continue their religious practices can go to the temple in Son Castelló, which remains operational and has enough space to accommodate attendees.

The police action is part of the inspection work carried out by the City Council to ensure that all public-use spaces have the necessary authorisations. For the residents of Pere Garau, the sealing represents the loss of a space that has been an intercultural meeting point in the neighbourhood for years. The Sikh community hopes to resolve the administrative process in the coming weeks and resume its usual activities.
