Gavriel, Sergio and Paola, three Venezuelan youths residing in Palma, have removed 9 bags of rubbish from Gesa Beach. They are now seeking funds and volunteers to continue cleaning other areas of the island.

The initiative began three weeks ago when Gavriel, Sergio and Paola noticed the amount of waste accumulated at Gesa Beach, a corner of Can Pere Antoni beach. In their first clean-up last Monday, they removed glass bottles, plastic containers, and even a shoe. The change was radical: the sand was practically free of waste.

An environmental problem that hurts

The group is not only concerned about the aesthetics of the beach. They have seen seagulls injured by the rubbish, some with a leg missing. "People do not help by leaving so much rubbish on the beaches. We want to change that," explains Gavriel, the spokesperson for the trio. Their main motivation is the environment and the protection of local wildlife.

The three youths are Venezuelan and have been on the island for a short time: two of them for six months and the third for just one month. They are currently unemployed and lack the budget to buy bags, rakes, and gloves. Therefore, they have made an appeal to the public and authorities for material and financial support.

"We started in Palma because we live here, but we would love to reach other areas. For that, we need to gather more people and be provided with bags, rakes, and gloves," says Gavriel.

More bins on the beach

The initiative is not limited to waste collection. The youths also urge the Palma City Council to place more bins in the area. They believe that the lack of containers near the beach makes it easier for people to leave rubbish on the sand. "If there were more bins, people would use them," they assert.

At the moment, the clean-up has stopped due to a lack of resources. The group has managed to remove 9 large bags of rubbish, but they want to go further. Their goal is to expand the action to other beaches in Mallorca, as long as they receive the necessary support.

How to collaborate

Anyone who wants to join the cause can contact the organisers via the phone +34 742 08 85 60. There, they can find out about upcoming events and how to contribute materials or donations. Any help is welcome, whether with bags, gloves, rakes, or simply lending a hand in the collection.

Meanwhile, Gavriel, Sergio and Paola continue to dream of clean beaches. "When we cleaned the beach, it changed radically," recalls Gavriel. A small gesture that, with support, could become a great movement in Mallorca.
