Palma gathers 65,000 people for the World Cup final and Spain's celebration

Over 65,000 people gathered in Palma to watch the 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, with two fan zones and a subsequent celebration in Joan Carles I square.

The fan zones at Son Fusteret and the Son Moix car park hosted over 25,000 fans who watched the 2026 World Cup final live. After the victory of the Spanish National Team, another 40,000 people flooded into Joan Carles I square to celebrate the triumph. The Palma City Council assessed on Monday a successful operation, with a security, mobility, and cleaning plan that functioned without serious incidents.

Two fan zones and a sea of fans

The City Council set up two spaces for the people of Palma to watch the match on giant screens. Around 15,000 supporters gathered at Son Fusteret, while another 10,000 people cheered at the Son Moix car park. The combination of both zones helped to ease congestion in the city centre during the broadcast.

At the end of the match, Joan Carles I square became the epicentre of joy. There, 40,000 people sang the anthem and waved red and yellow flags in a wave of football fervour. The Local Police of Palma deployed a special operation that ensured safety without significant disturbances.

Express cleaning: the city woke up spotless

The City Council activated a simultaneous cleaning operation at 4:00 AM in the three key locations. EMAYA mobilised 25 workers and 14 specialised vehicles, in addition to installing over 100 extra bins for waste collection. The result: by early Monday morning, Joan Carles I square and its surroundings were completely clean.

The Councillor for Security, Jaume Gost, highlighted that the cleaning operation was quick and efficient, allowing the city to return to normalcy within hours. We want to thank all the services involved for their work, which made it possible for Palma to look as it always does after a night of celebration, he added.

A coordinated operation for a historic night

The Palma City Council has positively evaluated the coordination among the various security and emergency bodies. The Local Police, along with ambulance services and civil protection, worked together to ensure the celebration went smoothly. The City Council assures that there were no serious incidents, only a few cases of alcohol intoxication and minor falls.

For the residents of Palma, Sunday night was a true success of coexistence. The streets in the centre, especially around Joan Carles I square, were filled with families and groups of friends celebrating with civility. The Councillor for Citizen Participation, Neus Truyol, emphasised that the response from the citizens has been exemplary, demonstrating that Palma knows how to celebrate grandly and responsibly.

With the afterglow of victory still present, the people of Palma are already looking to the future. The city has shown its capacity to host large events, and the City Council does not rule out repeating the experience if the Spanish National Team reaches another final.
