The Calvià Town Hall has announced a security and coordination device for the total solar eclipse scheduled for August 12. This phenomenon has been declared of exceptional public interest by the central government, highlighting its significance.
Details of the municipal operation
The operation will begin 24 hours before the eclipse, with the deployment of Local Police and Civil Protection services. The aim is to ensure the safety of residents and visitors, as well as the proper functioning of emergency services.
To ensure safety along the coastline, surveillance and rescue services at Santa Ponça beach will be reinforced, extending lifeguard hours until 10:00 PM. Additionally, Civil Protection personnel and vessels will be available for maritime surveillance.
Mobility restrictions will be implemented to avoid overcrowding, especially at Puig de sa Morisca and other viewpoints in the municipality, which will be closed to access during the eclipse.
Recommendations for observing the eclipse
The government has designated Santa Ponça beach as the Official Observation Zone for the eclipse, limiting access to 26 designated points across Mallorca. Capacity will be monitored, and once the limit is reached, access will be closed.
Citizens are advised to avoid unnecessary travel on the day of the eclipse, especially towards coastal areas. The event will begin at 7:38 PM, reaching total darkness between 8:30 and 8:34 PM.
For those who must travel, public transport is recommended to minimize traffic congestion. Those with properly accredited and justified vehicles will be allowed access to the municipality, although they may encounter traffic controls.
The Town Hall also reminds the importance of observing the eclipse with proper protection, using certified glasses, and not homemade methods that could damage eyesight.
Finally, on July 30, the Santa Ponça Library will hold a workshop on eclipses led by Astromallorca, which will be free but requires prior registration.
