The municipality of Santanyí has revived its traditional squash tournament after ten years without being held. Palmesan player Hug Massuti triumphed in the final against British player John Perry with a decisive 3-0.
The racquet sport has once again shone in Santanyí. This weekend, the football field of Cala d'Or hosted the much-anticipated return of the local Squash Tournament, an event that had not taken place for nearly a decade and has returned with strength, gathering 25 participants from both within and outside the islands.
The competition, which took place in an atmosphere of great intensity and sportsmanship, featured players from Ibiza, Andorra, and Bilbao, as well as local figures who did not want to miss this reunion with high-level squash. The stands recorded a notable influx of spectators, who enjoyed matches of great technical quality.
The star of the tournament was Palmesan Hug Massuti, who demonstrated exceptional form throughout the championship. In the grand final, Massuti decisively defeated British player John Perry, a veteran competitor based in Mallorca who put up a fight despite the final score of 3-0. The third place went to Marc Beaton, who benefited from the withdrawal due to injury of Iván Vergottino in the bronze match.
The organising committee has expressed gratitude for the support received to make this return possible. In particular, they highlighted the collaboration of private sponsors and the Santanyí Town Hall, whose institutional involvement has been fundamental in rescuing a competition with such tradition in the municipality.
With the success of this edition of resumption, the organisation is already working with an eye on next year, aiming to consolidate the tournament in the Balearic sports calendar and continue adding editions. Squash once again has a fixed date in Santanyí.
