The Santanyí Town Council has started drilling four new water intakes in Sa Vinya and Can Baltasar to reinforce supply security in light of high summer demand.
The Santanyí Town Council has initiated the drilling of four new underground water intakes in the municipality, aimed at improving supply security and preventing shortages during the summer months when consumption surges.
The work began on July 13, after obtaining the necessary authorisations from the Directorate General of Water Resources of the Government of the Balearic Islands, and is expected to be completed in the coming weeks. The project includes the execution of two wells in the Sa Vinya area and another two in Can Baltasar.
The Mayor of Santanyí, Maria Pons, and the Councillor for the Environment, Bárbara Xamena, visited the site on Tuesday to oversee the progress of the works. Also present were municipal technician Maria del Mar Rigo and representatives from the concessionaire Aigua Sa Figuereta, responsible for managing the service.
“Our priority is to ensure a continuous and quality service across all areas of the municipality. With these new wells, we increase supply security during peak times, such as summer, anticipating any potential technical issues,” Pons stated during the visit.
The initiative does not aim to increase the overall volume of water extraction but rather to distribute the authorised flow among a greater number of wells. This way, the concentration of pumping at specific points is reduced, balancing the system and allowing Aigua Sa Figuereta greater flexibility in the face of any contingencies.
Bárbara Xamena highlighted the sustainable approach of the project: “With this action, we are moving towards a more robust supply system with greater responsiveness to potential incidents. We are doing this through responsible management of the aquifer, as the goal is not to extract more water, but to distribute the authorised volume among a larger number of wells to avoid overloading the natural environment.”
Despite improvements in the reliability of the network, the health rating of the water in this area remains unsuitable for human consumption. The definitive solution to ensure the potability of the water will depend on the future desalination plant in Llevant de Mallorca and the connection infrastructures planned by the Government.
The Town Council and the concessionaire continue to work in coordination to provide maximum guarantee and stability in supply to the entire population, especially during the months of highest tourist influx and water demand.
