The Moviment Jove de Sóller and the platform Menys Turisme, Més Vida have announced a mobilization against the touristification of the municipality for the upcoming August 8. The protest is set against a backdrop of growing social discontent and comes just after the day of protests on July 26, which the entities consider historic.
The groups denounce that the current tourism model has led Sóller to a critical situation. They point out that saturation manifests in multiple areas: the lack of public transport, the pressure from rental cars, the proliferation of tourist homes, and real estate speculation. According to the organizations, these factors are causing the degradation of local commerce and the replacement of local activities with businesses aimed exclusively at visitors.
The entities believe that a protected territory with finite capacity “cannot be treated as a backdrop for mass consumption.” They accuse the administrations of celebrating tourism records while the valley deteriorates and the working class suffers the consequences. In their view, the model has exceeded the acceptable limits for Sóller, and a profound rethinking is necessary that questions the tourist monoculture from its roots.
Moviment Jove de Sóller and Menys Turisme, Més Vida argue that institutional politics “has been unable to address the structural causes” of the problem and that the response must come “from below, from the community, from the streets and squares.” The mobilization on August 8 is proposed as a turning point, with the intention of extending the debate to other municipalities in Mallorca that are also beginning to demand clear and quantifiable limits on tourism growth.
The groups call for citizen participation and assert that Sóller “raises its voice” in defense of the territory, local commerce, and the quality of life of residents.
