Menys Turisme Més Vida and the Moviment Jove de Sóller have called for a protest on August 8 in Plaça dels Estiradors under the slogan "Sóller, al límit".
The group Menys Turisme Més Vida, along with the Moviment Jove de Sóller, has called for a demonstration in the municipality for the upcoming August 8. The protest, announced via social media, denounces the tourist overcrowding that the town is suffering and is framed under the slogan "Sóller, al límit". The call comes just days after the large demonstration planned in Palma on July 26, which the organisers describe as "historic".
According to the organisers, the mobilization responds to the problems arising from the touristification of the municipality, which have been exacerbated by poor public transport and a lack of parking due to the excess of rental cars. They also point to the proliferation of tourist rental homes and real estate speculation as key factors. "In the town, local and proximity commerce is being systematically destroyed in favour of businesses oriented towards tourism," they denounce.
The concentration will take place in Plaça dels Estiradors, in the midst of the high tourist season, when many residents feel displaced and believe they have lost quality of life and services. A recent report commissioned by the Sóller Town Hall has determined that the municipality is already saturated, having exceeded 75 tourist places for every 100 inhabitants. Furthermore, the real estate pressure has doubled housing prices in just 15 years.
The protest on August 8 aims to highlight the discontent of a part of the Sóller population, who see how mass tourism affects their daily lives. The organisers expect high participation and remind that the fight against overcrowding is not exclusive to Sóller, but extends to other parts of Mallorca.
The group Menys Turisme Més Vida has been denouncing the situation for some time and has organised several previous actions. The event on August 8 will be a new opportunity for residents to express their rejection of the current tourism model and demand measures from the Town Hall and the Balearic Government.
