The exhibition brings together three textile installations by the artist and turns Sa Refinadora into one of the venues for the Biennal B, driven by Es Baluard Museu.
The Mallorcan artist Teresa Matas has inaugurated her latest exhibition proposal, titled 'A media lumbre', at Sa Refinadora de Marratxí. The exhibition, curated by Blanca de la Torre, originated at IVAM in Valencia and now arrives on the island as part of the Biennal B, a project promoted by Es Baluard Museu.
The exhibition features three textile installations: 'Vol interromput' (2009), 'Abrazos perdidos' (2011), and 'Roba plena de llàgrimes' (2002-2006). Through fabrics, used clothing, and materials with history, Matas addresses female identity, the pain of loss, mourning, and the healing capacity of manual creation.
Matas' return to this emblematic building carries a special emotional weight, as her family had a direct connection with the old factory. “I work with fabrics because they retain the imprint of people; sewing is a way of thinking, remembering, and repairing,” the artist explained.
The proposal advocates for the slowness of the creative process in contrast to contemporary haste. The use of fabric and manual work connects with the artisan tradition of Marratxí, transforming scraps into a collective autobiography.
The inauguration was attended by a large representation of the Balearic cultural sector, including names like Ñaco Fabre, Joan Oliver, Joan Pere Català, Pep Llambías, and Andreu Llambías, among others.
The exhibition will remain open until September 2. Sa Refinadora thus consolidates itself as one of the reference spaces for the Biennal B, which seeks to decentralise contemporary art in Mallorca and bring it closer to different municipalities.
For the residents of Marratxí and the rest of the island, the exhibition offers the opportunity to closely engage with the work of one of the most incisive creators in the current landscape, in a space with strong local historical ties.
