The artists PD Lluca and Santa Servera Màrtir claim that a group of young people heckled, spat at, and assaulted them during the patronal festivities. They also report that the police did not act decisively.
The DJs PD Lluca and Santa Servera Màrtir have publicly reported suffering homophobic insults, spitting, and assaults during the patronal festivities of Santa Maria del Camí, in the early hours of Saturday. The artists, hired by the Town Hall, recounted on social media that a group of local youths positioned themselves at the front and began to heckle them from the start of the set.
Insults and escalating violence
According to the DJs' testimony, the group displayed a Spanish flag, threw objects and spit at the stage, and shouted insults such as “faggots”. The artists are unsure whether the hostility was due to the flags of Palestine, SOS Residents, and Antihomophobe Action that they placed on the mixing table or simply because of their status as “queer individuals”.
The session leaders explained that they decided to continue in light of the support from other attendees. However, the situation became more violent: the youths began to physically and verbally assault those who defended the DJs. “They hurled insults, spit, and punches, causing in some cases marks and physical injuries and the need for medical attention,” they stated in a press release. Ultimately, the artists stopped the performance.
Criticism of police response
The DJs have also questioned the intervention of the Local Police. According to their account, the officers merely contained both parties, “equating situations that were not comparable,” despite the artists' belief that one group had deliberately attempted to sabotage the event. The artists demand “a clear stance from the responsible authorities and effective measures” to prevent such incidents from recurring.
In their post, they describe it as “deeply concerning” that young people of a tender age are “imbued with a visceral hatred towards difference”. However, they clarify that they do not intend to criminalise the youths, but believe it is necessary to reflect on the normalisation of reactionary, xenophobic, and LGTBI-phobic discourses.
Context of tension in the municipality
This incident occurs in a heated atmosphere in Santa Maria del Camí, following the arrest of two activists for vandalising a real estate agency. The Town Hall has not yet commented on the events, although the DJs are hoping for an institutional response. So far, the public complaint has sparked a broad debate on social media about safety at the patronal festivities and zero tolerance towards LGTBIfobia.
For the residents of Santa Maria, this incident is a cold shower during festivities that should be about coexistence. The question now is whether the Council will take measures to ensure that the next event proceeds without incidents. The DJs, for their part, have called for an investigation into the events and for the assailants to be identified.
