Prosecutors are seeking nine years in prison for each of the three defendants, who must also compensate the victim with 75,000 euros. The pre-trial hearing will take place next Wednesday.
The Provincial Court of Baleares will begin hearing the case against three tourists accused of raping a 19-year-old woman in a Playa de Palma hotel in August 2021 next Wednesday. The prosecution is requesting a sentence of nine years in prison for each of them, as well as a joint compensation of 75,000 euros.
The events occurred in August 2021
According to the indictment, the three defendants, who were on holiday in Mallorca, contacted a group of three young tourists, also 19 years old, who were staying at the Playa de Palma. That night, they consumed alcoholic beverages together and later went to the hotel where the defendants were staying.
The victim engaged in consensual sexual relations with one of them. At that moment, her two friends left the room and went back to the apartment they had booked, mistakenly taking the young woman's mobile phone, thinking she had left with them.
Left alone with the three defendants, the young woman felt scared and bewildered. It was then, according to the accusation, that the three men raped her.
Physical and psychological consequences
The victim had to be treated in a hospital for numerous injuries sustained. Furthermore, she has required psychological and psychiatric treatment to overcome the trauma. The prosecution believes that the events constitute a crime of sexual abuse and demands that the defendants compensate the young woman with 75,000 euros.
The trial, which will be held in the Second Section of the Provincial Court, will commence next Wednesday at 12:45 with the pre-trial hearing. The process is expected to last several days.
A case that shocks Playa de Palma
The Playa de Palma area, one of Mallorca's main tourist destinations, has been the scene of several episodes of sexual violence in recent years. This case has once again highlighted the safety of young women travelling alone to the island.
Authorities remind the importance of reporting any aggression and taking extra precautions in nightlife environments. The Palma City Council has launched awareness campaigns and established violet points in areas with high tourist traffic.
The pre-trial hearing will serve to establish procedural issues and determine if the parties reach an agreement before the oral trial. The private prosecution, representing the victim, has also requested the maximum penalty provided for.
