Mallorca Airport has issued a series of recommendations to passengers planning to fly in the coming days, in light of the strike called by Swissport ground handling staff. The strikes, which will affect 28 July and 1, 4, and 8 August, could cause delays and complications in airport operations.
The main recommendation is for travellers to opt to travel only with hand luggage, whenever possible, and to check-in online before arriving at the airport. This way, the processes are expedited and the impact of the strikes on check-in and baggage handling is minimised.
The strike affects several international airlines that are assisted by Swissport at Mallorca airport. Among them are Air Canada, Etihad Airways, TUI, Condor, and DK, companies that connect the island with key source markets such as Canada, the United Arab Emirates, and Germany.
Swissport workers are demanding improvements in wages and working conditions. Their demands include updating salaries in line with the CPI, greater job stability, the expansion of part-time hours, and strengthening occupational risk prevention measures, especially against the high temperatures recorded on the airport platform.
The CCOO union, which is leading the call for the strike, claims that the company has not committed to these demands and that minimum services have not yet been communicated, increasing uncertainty about how the strikes will affect daily operations.
The airport insists that passengers check the status of their flight in advance and arrive at the facilities with enough time. The priority is to reduce waiting times and prevent the strikes from causing congestion in the terminals.
