The platform ‘Marxes de Mallorca per Palestina’ has called for a human chain this Friday, 31 July, at 19:30 on the Paseo Marítimo in Palma. Representatives from 61 towns and three cities on the island will participate.
The Paseo Marítimo in Palma will host a solidarity chain in support of the Palestinian people this Friday, 31 July, starting at 19:30, organised by the citizens' platform ‘Marxes de Mallorca per Palestina’. The initiative, which will begin at the street of Contramuelle Mollet and extend to Moll Vell, next to the Cathedral, aims to denounce the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the West Bank, which, according to the organisation, continues to worsen despite the announced ceasefire.
The mobilisation will feature representatives from 61 municipalities in Mallorca and from the three most populated cities on the island: Palma, Inca, and Manacor. Participants will carry the banners that were used in last year's protests, when the organisation estimates that around 22,000 people gathered simultaneously at various points across the island.
The coordinators of the platform, María Durán, a resident of Manacor, and Joana Maria Fiol, from Montuïri, explained that, despite the announcement of a ceasefire in Gaza, “attacks have not ceased” and the population continues to face “serious difficulties in accessing food, drinking water, and healthcare.” They report that numerous trucks loaded with food have been unable to enter the Gaza Strip.
In addition to the human chain, the event will include a visual performance to represent the reality faced by the Palestinian population. The platform has also raised concerns about the increase in violence in the West Bank, where there have been “attacks on Palestinian villages, house fires, and forced displacements” due to the expansion of Israeli settlements, which they consider a violation of human rights.
During the presentation, the organisers recalled that, according to their data, Palestine has lost “more than 85% of its territory since 1948” and that the conflict has caused “tens of thousands of fatalities, many of whom are women and children.”
With this new mobilisation, Marxes de Mallorca per Palestina is calling on the people of Mallorca to participate in the chain and show their support for the Palestinian people. The event is this Friday at 19:30 on the Paseo Marítimo in Palma, starting at the street of Contramuelle Mollet.
