The Club de Mar Mallorca has become the venue for an exhibition that reviews over five centuries of relations between Spain and the Principality of Monaco. The exhibition, titled 'Monaco and Spain: five centuries of shared history', will be open to the public at the Palma club until August 6, and marks the first major international cultural exhibition hosted by the Club de Mar following its recent comprehensive renovation.
A journey through shared history
The exhibition offers a chronological journey that begins with the first links between the Lords of Monaco and the Crown of Castile, extending to current diplomatic relations. Through photographs, historical documents, and educational material, visitors can discover episodes such as the Spanish protection over the Principality during the 16th century, the relationships between the royal houses, and the scientific work of Prince Albert I.
The Mallorca stage of the exhibition includes a special incentive: part of the displayed material comes from the Casa Planas Foundation and the Casa Planas Archive, featuring historical images of the visits made by Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace to Mallorca during the 1960s. These photographs reinforce the historical bond between the island and the Principality and are one of the major novelties of the exhibition in Palma.
Strengthening Mediterranean ties
The inauguration, held on Tuesday afternoon, was presided over by the Ambassador of the Principality of Monaco to Spain, Catherine Fautrier-Rousseau, who highlighted that the exhibition aims to bring the public closer to a relationship built "on trust, friendship, and cooperation" over more than five centuries. Fautrier-Rousseau emphasized that Mallorca was a "logical" stop in the exhibition's tour due to Monaco's close collaboration with Mediterranean territories and the recent boost from the Principality's Consulate in the Balearics.
Meanwhile, the honorary consul of the Principality of Monaco in the Balearics, Laura Calvo, explained that the Balearics and Monaco share "a Mediterranean identity". Calvo recalled that the collaboration between both territories is already reflected in initiatives such as "the participation of Balearic nautical companies in the Monaco Yacht Show or the recent celebration of the Gastronomic Week of Spain at the Café de Paris in Monaco", where products from the Balearics were also present. From her perspective, such projects help reinforce "bilateral relations" that both institutions aim to continue promoting in the coming years.
The exhibition arrives in the Balearic capital after its tour in Madrid and Seville, and is part of the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the first diplomatic mission between Monaco and Spain. For the Club de Mar Mallorca, hosting this exhibition is a milestone, as it is the first major international cultural exhibition organized after the comprehensive renovation of its facilities, a process that has lasted several years and has completely modernized the space.
