The Palma City Council has announced traffic restrictions and bus diversions due to the anti-overtourism protest this Sunday. The route will start at Plaza de España and end at Parc de la Mar.
The centre of Palma is preparing for a new civic mobilization. The protest against overtourism, scheduled for this Sunday, will require the City Council to establish a special traffic and public transport operation. The Local Police have designed road closures and diversions that will affect several main arteries of the city from early afternoon.
The march will begin at 18:00 from Plaza de España. From there, participants will travel along Avenida del Comte de Sallent, Avenida de Alemanya, Baró de Pinopar, La Rambla, Riera, Unió, the Paseo del Born, Plaza de la Reina, and Antoni Maura, concluding at Parc de la Mar. This route, approximately two kilometres long, passes through the commercial and administrative heart of Palma.
To ensure safety, traffic will be diverted at several key points. On Avenida Alemania, heading towards Plaza de España, vehicles will need to take the General Riera tunnel. Those travelling on General Riera will be redirected towards Avenida Alemania or Antoni Marquès. Additionally, access from Antoni Maura to Plaza de la Reina and from Jaume III to Joan Carles I will be completely closed to traffic.
Drivers coming from 31 de Desembre and Eusebi Estada streets will be diverted to Avenida del Comte de Sallent. The Local Police recommend avoiding the city centre and using alternative routes such as the Paseo Marítimo or the Vía de Cintura for travel this Sunday afternoon.
Public transport will also be affected. EMT Palma and TIB will divert the lines that coincide with the protest route. Specifically, lines A1 (Aeroport-Palma Centre), L1 (Portopí - Sindicat), L3 (Pont d’Inca – Joan Carles I), L4 (Ses Illetes-Nou Llevant), L5 (Es Rafal Nou - Plaça Progrés), L7 (Son Gotleu-Son Serra-La Vileta/Son Vida), L8 (Son Roca – Sindicat), L10 (Son Castelló-Sindicat), and L12 (Sa Garriga-Nou Llevant) will have altered routes.
Users of these lines should check the information panels at the stops or the EMT app for specific diversions. It is recommended to plan journeys in advance and anticipate possible delays.
Underground parking facilities will also be affected. Exits from the Comte de Sallent car park towards Plaza de España, from the Via Roma car park towards Baró de Pinopar, and from the Plaza Major car park towards La Rambla will remain closed during the protest. Those with vehicles in these parking areas will need to use alternative exits.
Additionally, during the operation, the restricted access controls (Acire) for Riera and Unió streets will be temporarily suspended, allowing unauthorized vehicles to circulate on those roads for the duration of the protest.
This Sunday’s protest is part of a series of civic demonstrations that have been taking place in the Balearic Islands in recent months, where mass tourism is a topic of debate. Organisers expect high participation, similar to previous events that have gathered thousands of people in the streets of Palma.
The City Council reminds that the security operation will be active from 16:00 until the end of the march, expected around 21:00. Citizens not participating in the protest are advised to avoid travelling through the city centre during this time and to opt for public transport or private vehicles via alternative routes.
