Sentenced to two and a half years for robbing a man in the old Palma prison

A 39-year-old man accepted two and a half years in prison for assaulting and robbing a man inside the old Palma prison. The victim suffered a traumatic brain injury and took a month to recover.

The Provincial Court of Palma has sentenced a 39-year-old robber to two and a half years in prison for assaulting and robbing a man inside the old Palma prison. The accused reached a plea agreement with the Prosecutor's Office, which initially sought ten years in prison.

The events occurred on the night of December 7, 2024, around nine o'clock, on Leocadio Togores street, next to the old prison. The convicted man and another unidentified individual approached the victim, assaulted him, and took him inside the old penitentiary.

Once inside, they searched him and stole 800 euros, his salary money, along with other belongings. Additionally, they punched and kicked him and threw an electric water dispenser at his face, causing him to fall down some stairs.

The next day, the attackers took the victim to the PAC of s'Escorxador for medical attention, forcing him to say that the injuries were due to a fight. He was later transferred to Son Espases hospital for treatment of his wounds. Upon leaving, the now-convicted man forced him to accompany him back to the old prison.

There, the victim encountered his ex-wife, who helped him escape the next day and seek help at a nearby veterinary clinic. A patrol from the National Police and an ambulance arrived at the scene. The attacker was arrested days later.

As a result of the assault, the victim suffered a traumatic brain injury with loss of consciousness, fractures of the nasal bones, a broken ethmoid, and bilateral frontal process of the maxilla. He took approximately a month to recover.

The plea agreement includes the suspension of the prison sentence, conditioned on the payment of compensation of 2,475 euros to the victim. The convicted man must pay 104 euros monthly for two years. If he fails to pay a fee within the first five days of the month, he will be ordered to serve his sentence immediately.

The defendant's lawyer was Carmen Cardona, who negotiated the reduction of the sentence. The trial was held at the Courts of Vía Alemania in Palma.

This case highlights the vulnerability of people who frequent degraded areas of the city, such as the surroundings of the old prison, a place that has been the scene of several criminal incidents in recent years.
