Work on CEIP s'Alzinar in Capdepera began this Tuesday with a seven-month timeline. Mayor Núria Garcia and technicians from IBISEC signed the start of a €2.2 million intervention.
The 241 students of CEIP s'Alzinar in Capdepera have been in modular classrooms since 2021. This Tuesday, they finally saw the start of the comprehensive reform of the centre, a project that had accumulated almost five years of delays. Mayor Núria Garcia, along with representatives from the Institut Balear d'Infraestructures (IBISEC) and the company Hermanos Parrot, signed the act to commence the work.
A long-awaited reform
Block B of the school was closed in November 2021 due to structural problems following heavy rains. Since then, students have been relocated to prefabricated modules while the educational community demanded a solution. The Associació de Pares i Mares (AMIPA) launched a mobilisation campaign at the beginning of the year with banners and letters to the Conselleria denouncing deficiencies in the Infant building.
Initially, a report recommended building a new school due to the clayey terrain. However, the Govern opted to reinforce the structure and carry out a comprehensive reform, pending the Ajuntament's ability to provide land for a new centre in the future. The Consell de Govern declared the work of regional interest on 13 March 2026 to expedite the procedures.
Investment of €2.2 million and seven months of work
The budget amounts to €2.2 million and the execution period is seven months. Students will not be able to use the facilities until the first quarter of 2027. The project includes the removal of tiles and the demolition of the flat roof of the second floor, as well as the porch connecting the buildings, to improve waterproofing and thermal insulation.
Inside, the tiling of corridors and lobbies will be replaced, and the bathrooms will be renovated. Externally, all facades of the centre will be addressed. The aim is to ensure better conditions of use, safety, and comfort for the entire educational community, according to the Govern.
The commitment of the Ajuntament
The Ajuntament of Capdepera has committed to reviewing the progress of the works to ensure that deadlines are met. Mayor Núria Garcia highlighted the importance of this intervention for the students and their families, who have endured years of waiting. The residents of Capdepera, who see their public school finally being renewed, hope that the reform will be the first step towards a worthy educational centre.
