A 70-year-old woman has been evacuated by the Mallorca Firefighters through a neighbour's house after refusing to leave her home, where a fire had broken out. The property was in extremely unsanitary conditions.
The Mallorca Firefighters had to devise a way to get a woman of about 70 years old out of her home on Major Street in Llucmajor. The elderly woman, who suffers from a severe case of Diogenes syndrome, refused to leave the house after a fire broke out inside.
A Rescue Through the Neighbour's House
Faced with the woman's firm resistance, the firefighters opted for an alternative route. They managed to access the house through a neighbouring property and evacuated the elderly woman through that same route. The operation also involved agents from the Civil Guard and the Local Police of Llucmajor, who secured the area and managed the tense situation.
Residents of Major Street watched in astonishment as the rescue unfolded. According to witnesses, the woman showed clear physical deterioration and the interior of the house was so cluttered with objects and rubbish that it was uninhabitable. Diogenes syndrome had kept the property in extreme unsanitary conditions, with odours that had been bothering the neighbourhood for some time.
Argument in the Street After the Rescue
Once outside, the tension did not dissipate. A heated argument broke out between the elderly woman and several residents, who reproached her for the state of filth and the foul smells they had endured for months. Neighbours claimed they had reported the state of the house to the authorities on several occasions, without any definitive solution being taken.
The woman was attended to by health services on the scene and was subsequently transferred to a hospital to assess her health condition. The fire, which may have been caused by an accumulation of objects near a heat source, was extinguished without damage to neighbouring homes.
The Llucmajor Town Hall has opened a file to assess the condition of the property and determine the necessary actions. Municipal sources indicated that they will contact social services to offer support to the woman, who may be temporarily relocated.
