The Almería Provincial Council is managing a package of works in Gérgal, Nacimiento, Alcudia de Monteagud, and Tahal worth over €500,000, which will generate 3,500 workdays for unemployed agricultural workers in the region.
The Agricultural Employment Promotion Programme (PFEA) has mobilised an investment exceeding €500,000 in four municipalities in the interior of Almería. The actions, managed by the Provincial Council, focus on street paving, improving water supply networks, and creating a new rural accommodation in Gérgal, Nacimiento, Alcudia de Monteagud, and Tahal.
A boost for rural employment
The PFEA is consolidating itself as an employment engine in rural Almería. The works will generate 3,500 workdays for unemployed workers in the agricultural sector, according to the Provincial Council. Each municipality has designed projects tailored to their needs, with execution periods ranging from three to six months.
In Gérgal, the main allocation is dedicated to the paving of several streets in the urban area, improving accessibility and road safety. In Nacimiento, the works focus on renewing the drinking water network, which had frequent breakdowns. Alcudia de Monteagud will use the funds to rehabilitate a municipal building as rural accommodation, promoting tourism. Tahal, for its part, will renew public lighting and sidewalks.
Impact on the daily lives of residents
For the residents of these municipalities, the improvements will mean a tangible change in their quality of life. The paved streets will reduce dust and mud, while the new water network will ensure a constant supply. The rural accommodation in Alcudia de Monteagud could attract visitors, boosting the local economy. The workdays will allow many agricultural workers to complete their contribution period and access subsidies.
The Provincial Council has highlighted that the PFEA is a key tool against depopulation. “These works not only improve infrastructure but also retain the population by generating employment and opportunities,” sources from the provincial body stated. The investment is part of the collaboration between the central government, the Junta de Andalucía, and the town councils.
Next steps and timelines
The works have already begun in Gérgal and Nacimiento, while in Alcudia de Monteagud and Tahal they will start in the coming weeks. It is expected that all actions will be completed before the end of the year, according to the planned schedule. Residents will be able to consult the details of the projects at their respective town halls.
The PFEA demonstrates, once again, that investment in rural areas has a multiplying effect: for every euro invested, direct employment is generated and the quality of life of those who choose to live in the interior of the province is improved.
