The full council of Manacor approved on Wednesday a budget of 678,800 euros from reserves to acquire land in Son Macià to build the long-awaited Day Centre.
The full council of Manacor is expected to approve on Wednesday the incorporation of a budget of 678,800 euros from municipal reserves for the purchase of land in Son Macià. The aim is to construct the Day Centre that residents have been demanding for years on that land.
According to municipal technicians, the plot must have a minimum area of 400 square metres and a maximum of 800. The price per square metre has been set at 760 euros, which amounts to a maximum expenditure of 608,000 euros plus 70,800 euros in taxes. The approved budget will allow for a public tender to acquire the land.
The mayor of Manacor, Miquel Oliver, confirmed that the council's intention is for the Day Centre to be located in the former convent of Ca ses Monges, a building with sufficient space to accommodate the service. "Our intention is for the Day Centre to be built in the building of Ca ses Monges," declared Oliver.
The community's demand began over a decade ago when the Sisters of Charity left the village and put the property of Ca ses Monges up for sale. The property was even advertised as an ideal place to build six terraced houses with a pool, which prompted residents to mobilise with pot-banging protests and petitions to demand the council purchase it.
In recent months, community pressure has intensified. Last November, the municipal council approved a motion to promote the Day Centre in Son Macià. In June, residents gathered again in front of Ca ses Monges, on sa Plana street, to demand that the socio-health space be built there.
Residents have also met with the president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, who committed to facilitating the purchase of the land so that Ca ses Monges can become publicly owned. With the approval of this budget, the process takes a step forward.
The Day Centre is a long-standing demand of Son Macià, a district of Manacor that lacks such facilities. The new centre will provide socio-healthcare services to elderly and dependent individuals, avoiding trips to the urban centre of Manacor.
The purchase of the land is the first administrative step. Once the land is acquired, the council will need to draft the project and tender the works. Mayor Oliver has not specified timelines, but the incorporation of reserves speeds up the process.
Residents hope that the acquisition of Ca ses Monges will be definitive. The property, which was donated nearly a century ago by the families of Macià to the Sisters of Charity, has been at the centre of debate for years. Now, with the approved budget, the future Day Centre seems closer.
