The Andratx Town Council has launched a new parking area exclusively for residents at the Port of Andratx, a temporary solution to alleviate the occupation of spaces due to construction work. Mayor Estefanía Gonzalvo has announced that the control will be done by license plate.

The Port of Andratx has introduced a free parking area for residents this week with the aim of relieving the pressure faced by locals during the summer months. The measure, announced by Mayor Estefanía Gonzalvo, responds to the occupation of half of the usual public parking by the storage of materials from the company Abaqua, which is carrying out works in the area.

The new space, temporarily allocated by the port authority, has spaces marked by green lines that identify exclusive use for registered residents. Additionally, a rotation area has been established for quick errands, designed for those who need to carry out a specific task at the port without having to drive around.

No paperwork: the license plate says it all

One of the major advantages of the system is its simplicity. Residents do not have to request any permit or display a sticker on their car. As Gonzalvo explained, "residents do not have to request anything." The control is the responsibility of the Local Police, who will verify the vehicle's license plate to ensure that the owner pays the mechanical traction vehicle tax in the municipality of Andratx.

In this way, the council avoids bureaucratic procedures and ensures that only registered locals can benefit from the parking. The mayor highlighted that this is a short-term solution, while the works by Abaqua last, but it could be extended if demand requires it.

Deterrent prices: the same recipe as in the pools

This policy of prioritising residents is not new in Andratx. Gonzalvo recalled that a similar system is already in place at the municipal pools to control capacity and prevent overcrowding. "For years we have had a differentiated public price for residents and non-residents," the mayor stated.

The objective is clearly deterrent: the Town Council increased the price of passes and tickets for non-registered individuals to make it "a bit more expensive for those who are not residents of the municipality." Thus, families from Andratx can access the facilities at an affordable price, while limiting the influx of visitors. A formula that, according to the council, has worked well and is now being applied to the parking area.

For the residents of the Port of Andratx, the measure provides relief during a time of year when finding a parking spot becomes an odyssey. The new parking area is also located in a strategic zone, close to the promenade and local shops, making life easier for those who live or work in the area.

The Town Council is already working on a definitive solution to the parking problem at the port, but in the meantime, residents can park free of charge and without complications. The Local Police have already begun patrolling the area to ensure that the green spaces are respected.

"Residents do not have to request anything"

Mayor Estefanía Gonzalvo insisted that the measure is the result of collaboration with the port authority and that agility has been prioritised. "We wanted an immediate solution, without residents having to queue or deal with paperwork," she stated. And, so far, the response has been positive: the green spaces fill up every day, but residents say it is now much easier to park.
