The Calvià Town Council has published ten recommendations for safely observing the solar eclipse on August 12, including traffic cuts and limiting access to Santa Ponça.

The Calvià Town Council has established a special operation for the solar eclipse that will be visible on the island on August 12. The council has disseminated a guideline of recommendations to ensure the safety of residents and visitors, and to avoid mobility issues and crowds at the most popular observation points.

The main warning is to avoid travel, especially by private vehicle, to Santa Ponça and other areas expected to have high attendance. The capacity of Santa Ponça beach will be reduced due to the security operation, and it is expected that the limit may be reached quickly, so it is advised not to come from other points in the municipality or the island.

To regulate traffic, the Local Police of Calvià will deploy around 60 agents and establish six control points on the access roads to the areas of highest attendance. These include the Cala Figuera road – Roundabout 8, Jardí square, the Costa de la Calma roundabout, access to Portals Vells, and two roundabouts accessing El Toro.

The operation will give absolute priority to emergency vehicles and public services. When the established capacity is reached, new vehicle access to the observation areas may be restricted.

The Town Council strongly advises against going to viewpoints, cliffs, or elevated areas to view the eclipse, as there are risks of landslides and falls. The Local Police may restrict access to these spaces, and it is reminded that alternative viewing points should not be sought in unapproved locations.

Given the high risk of fire, maximum responsibility is requested: avoid any behaviour that could cause a fire, respect natural spaces, and do not leave waste. The operation will also include vessels to reinforce maritime safety during the phenomenon.

To safely observe the eclipse, it is essential to use specific and approved glasses for solar observation. One should never look directly at the Sun without protection, as the council reminds, urging adherence to the recommendations of the competent authorities.

The operation may be modified throughout the day depending on attendance and traffic. Therefore, it is recommended to follow the authorities' indications and consult updated information on the website, social media, and the official WhatsApp channel of the Calvià Town Council.

Additionally, the council has set up a specific website (calvia.com/es/eclipsecalvia) where all relevant information is centralized: safety recommendations, mobility and traffic, affected areas, restrictions, and the latest updates on the operation. It is recommended to consult it before making any travel plans.
