Two tourists have suffered minor injuries after their quad overturned while they were inside the Sóller tunnel. The accident forced the road to close in both directions and caused long traffic jams.
The Sóller tunnel remained closed to traffic for nearly two hours this afternoon after a quad carrying two tourists overturned inside it. The incident, which occurred around half past three, necessitated the closure of traffic in both directions to facilitate assistance to the victims and the removal of the vehicle.
According to sources from the emergency services, the quad collided with a curb inside the tunnel and ended up overturning. The two occupants, two foreign women, were left in the middle of the roadway next to the vehicle, prompting the activation of the emergency protocol.
Several calls alerted the emergency services, who rushed to the scene immediately. Traffic Civil Guard officers and several ambulances arrived at the tunnel, where they attended to one of the tourists, who had sustained minor injuries. The other occupant was unharmed, according to police sources.
The tunnel closure caused significant delays in the area. After four o'clock in the afternoon, traffic was reopened in the direction of Sóller, but the flow towards Palma remained blocked, with a jam extending to the Port road. Finally, the tunnel was fully reopened shortly after five.
Residents of Sóller have criticized the lack of signs warning of the tunnel closure at the village exit. Due to the incident, many drivers were unaware of the closure until they found themselves in the middle of a traffic jam. Some opted to turn back and return to Sóller, while others decided to continue their journey via the Coll de Sóller.
The accident highlights the dangers of quads on winding roads and in tunnels. Authorities remind the importance of adhering to speed limits and maintaining attention while driving, especially on roads with high tourist traffic.
Drivers heading to Sóller or Palma should check traffic conditions before setting off, as incidents like this can cause unexpected closures. Alternative routes such as the Coll road or the MA-11 are recommended.
