Alcúdia has raised the Blue Flag 2026 this Thursday at Platja d'Alcúdia, a distinction that recognises the environmental and tourist quality of the beach. Additionally, the municipality has been one of three in all of Spain awarded the special mention for Universal Accessibility.
Platja d'Alcúdia has once again displayed the Blue Flag since this Thursday, the international award that certifies excellence in water quality, environmental management, safety, and services. The flag-raising ceremony, held on the beach itself, also served to highlight the extra recognition the municipality has received: the special mention for Universal Accessibility, a distinction that only three localities in all of Spain have obtained this year.
The mayor of Alcúdia, Fina Linares, emphasised during the event that "the Blue Flag and this special mention are the result of constant work throughout the year. Behind these recognitions are many people who work to ensure that Platja d'Alcúdia offers quality services and is an accessible space for everyone." Linares was accompanied by the vice president of the Mallorcan Institute of Social Affairs (IMAS), Magdalena Garcia; the president of the Municipal Services Company of Alcúdia (EMSA), Laura Serra; and the councillor for the Environment, Francisco J. Rodríguez.
The president of EMSA, Laura Serra, explained that the Blue Flag is a distinction present in more than twenty European countries and that, in Spain, this year it has been awarded to 589 beaches and ports. Serra highlighted that the special mention recognises "the effort made to provide an increasingly accessible and inclusive beach."
The improvements that have earned Alcúdia this recognition include adapted walkways, accessible shaded areas, adapted changing rooms and toilets, a bathing assistance service with amphibious chairs, and a specific route for visually impaired individuals. All these actions allow people with disabilities or reduced mobility to enjoy the beach with greater autonomy, safety, and equal opportunities.
Platja d'Alcúdia, one of the largest and busiest beaches in Mallorca, thus reinforces its commitment to sustainable and inclusive tourism. The acquisition of the Blue Flag also serves as an incentive for visitors seeking destinations committed to the environment and accessibility.
The distinction, which has been flying at the beach since today, will remain throughout the summer season, subject to periodic checks by the Blue Flag organisation to ensure compliance with standards. The Alcúdia Town Council has reminded that the beach also holds the ISO 14001 environmental management certificate and the EMAS system.
With this award, Alcúdia consolidates itself as a benchmark on the Mallorcan coast, not only for the quality of its waters and services but also for its commitment to universal accessibility. Residents and tourists can now enjoy a beach that, in addition to being a leisure space, is an example of inclusion.
