The Council of Mallorca has begun emergency works to stabilise the industrial complex of Sóller, declared a BIC, with an investment of 1.5 million euros and a timeframe of five months.
The Council of Mallorca has started this week the reinforcement works for Sa Fàbrica Nova de Sóller, the historic textile complex acquired by the institution in December 2025. The action, budgeted at 1.5 million euros, aims to halt the accelerated deterioration of the building and ensure safety ahead of its future comprehensive rehabilitation.
A structure of formworks and props to save the heritage
According to the Council, the works will focus on buildings one and two, as well as the annex of the complex. An internal structure of formworks and props will be installed to support the floors and roofs, which are in a critical state due to rainwater infiltration.
Additionally, a perimeter scaffolding and a protective covering will be placed over the entire complex. This measure will prevent further water seepage, the main cause of the accelerated deterioration that the building has suffered for years.
The workers will handle the original textile machinery with care, which is still preserved inside. Being protected by the declaration of Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC), all machinery will remain in its original location during the works.
A future textile museum on the horizon
The reinforcement is just the first step. In parallel, the Council is drafting the project for comprehensive rehabilitation, recovery, and restoration of the complex. This will include the restoration of the historical machinery and the museumification of the space, driven by the Department of Culture and Heritage, to transform it into the future Textile Museum of Mallorca.
The president of the Council, Llorenç Galmés, visited the facilities and argued that the reinforcement will allow us to "buy time" until the definitive rehabilitation is carried out. "It is an emergency work necessary to prevent the total loss of an emblematic building of our industrial history," he stated.
For the residents of Sóller, this intervention represents a relief. The complex, which has been unused for decades, had reached a point of advanced ruin that jeopardised its conservation. Now, with the purchase by the Council and these works, a window of hope opens to recover a symbol of the textile past of the region.
Timelines and next steps
The emergency works have a execution period of five months. During this time, technicians will also advance in drafting the comprehensive rehabilitation project, which should be ready for bidding throughout the next year.
The Council has reminded that the acquisition of Sa Fàbrica Nova in December 2025 was a strategic decision to prevent the loss of the building. Since then, preliminary studies have been conducted, and work has been done to define priority actions.
The expectation is that, once the reinforcement is completed, the building will be stabilised and protected from the weather, allowing the next phase of rehabilitation to be undertaken with guarantees. The ultimate goal is to turn the complex into a cultural and tourist reference for the island, highlighting the Mallorcan textile industry.
