The National Police have arrested a Spanish man accused of robbery with violence and damage after breaking into a home on Aragón Street, assaulting the resident – who has a physical disability – and causing destruction upon finding no loot.
National Police officers located the alleged assailant last Saturday afternoon in Fra Joan Alcina Square in Palma, who had been wanted since March. The detainee, of Spanish origin, was brought before the court, and the judge ordered his provisional imprisonment.
Assault on Aragón Street
The events date back to mid-March, around 8:00 PM, in a home on Aragón Street in the capital. According to the investigation by the Judicial Police Group of the Central Police Station, the now detained man called out to the window of the house and engaged in conversation with the resident, asking for money. Upon refusal, he began to insult him and suddenly jumped inside through the window.
Once inside, he struck the victim, who suffers from a physical disability, and punched him in the face. The assailant searched the room for money, but the victim attempted to stop him and managed to push him away. The aggressor reacted by throwing him back to the ground and kicking him in the back.
A neighbour passing by heard the screams, knocked on the door, and managed to enter to assist the resident and reprimand the assailant for his behaviour. Finding no loot, the assailant pushed the victim again, causing another fall, and damaged a door, a window, and a television before fleeing.
Investigation and arrest
The Judicial Police Group of the Central Police Station began investigations following the victim's report. The officers managed to identify the alleged perpetrator, who had fled, leading to his search and capture. Last Saturday, a patrol from the Citizen Attention Group located him in the central Fra Joan Alcina Square and proceeded with his arrest.
The detainee, whose further details have not been disclosed, was brought before the duty court in Palma, which ordered his provisional imprisonment. The victim, who suffered injuries and material damage, has received assistance from municipal social services, according to police sources.
Consequences for the neighbourhood
The incident has generated alarm among the residents of Aragón Street, a residential area of Palma. Disability associations have highlighted the vulnerability of this group to violent crimes. The National Police recommends not opening the door or window to strangers and calling 091 if any suspicion arises.
The detainee, who has a history of similar incidents, according to investigative sources, faces prison sentences of up to five years for robbery with violence, in addition to charges of assault and damage. The trial will take place in the coming months at the Provincial Court of Palma.
