The Tourism Councillor, Guillem Ginard, met with the board of the Playa de Palma Hotel Association to gain firsthand insight into the season's progress and strengthen public-private collaboration.

The Mallorca Council, through the Department of Tourism, maintains direct contact with the tourism sector during the high season. Councillor Guillem Ginard, accompanied by the island's Director of Tourism for Demand and Hospitality, Tomeu Ferragut, has developed a work agenda in Platja de Palma, one of the island's main tourist destinations.

Meeting with hoteliers and lines of action

Ginard held a meeting with the board of the Playa de Palma Hotel Association, led by its president, Pedro Marín. At the meeting, the councillor presented the main lines of action of the Department of Tourism and the Responsible Tourism Foundation of Mallorca for the coming months.

The aim was to understand the proposals and needs of the sector, as well as to confirm the good performance of the tourist season. Ginard conveyed the Council's willingness to continue working alongside professionals to consolidate Mallorca as a responsible, quality, and competitive tourist destination.

"Collaboration between administrations and the tourism sector is essential to successfully face the challenges of the present and the future. Mallorca must continue to be an international benchmark in quality, sustainability, and responsibility," highlighted Guillem Ginard.

Visit to sustainability projects at the RIU Playa Park hotel

The agenda included a visit to the RIU Playa Park hotel, where the councillor learned, alongside the hotel's director, Gina Noguer, and the Corporate Social Responsibility Director of RIU Hotels & Resorts, Catalina Alemany, about some of the main sustainability and circular economy projects promoted by the chain.

Among them is the collaboration with Lafiore to transform recycled glass from hotels into new artisanal pieces. This initiative allowed for the recycling of 30 tons of glass in 2025 and prevented the emission of 18 tons of CO₂. The project that converts organic waste from buffets into compost for local farmers was also presented, closing the food cycle and reducing waste.

Additionally, the chain explained its commitment to energy transition: 90% of the electricity it consumes globally comes from renewable sources, and 100% of the energy used in its establishments in the Balearic Islands is renewable and locally generated thanks to its agreement with TIRME. Ginard valued these initiatives, aligned with the Mallorca Council's strategy to promote an increasingly responsible tourism model, with initiatives like Mallorca Pledge, which encourage the sector's commitment to sustainability and the territory.

These meetings are part of the work agenda that the Department of Tourism maintains during the high season to understand the reality of the sector, maintain ongoing contact with tourism professionals, and continue advancing towards a model based on sustainability, quality, and responsibility. For the Mallorcan reader, these actions reinforce the commitment to quality tourism that benefits the local economy without compromising the environment.
