Algaida is already experiencing the final stretch of the Sant Jaume festivities, which will culminate on the 24th and 25th of July with the street party and the celebration of the patron saint. The Cossiers will once again be the main protagonists with 'el quadrat' and the dance of the Offering.
The municipality of Algaida has been immersed in its patron saint festivities of Sant Jaume since the 5th of July, but the countdown to the central events has already begun. The street party on Friday the 24th and the solemn mass on Saturday the 25th will mark the peak of a programme that has combined sports, culture, and tradition.
The Cossiers, one of the hallmarks of the municipality, will be the main stars. On Friday the 24th at 19:30, they will perform "el quadrat" in the square, and on Saturday the 25th, following the mass sung by the Orfeó de Castellitx, they will dance the Offering in the church square. The mayor, Margalida Fullana, has highlighted that "all events are equally important and have been prepared with the same dedication."
A Thursday with Cultural Flavour
This Thursday the 16th of July marks the start of some of the most anticipated events. At 18:30, the exhibition "Blai Bonet: De claror i de cor" will be inaugurated at the Casa de la Vila, in celebration of the centenary of the poet, one of the most unique voices in 20th-century Catalan literature.
The exhibition offers an intimate look at the work of the Algaida-born author, and it will be open for viewing throughout the festive period. It is a unique opportunity for locals and visitors to closely explore the legacy of Blai Bonet, who was born in the village in 1926.
Solidarity and Tribute to the Elderly
On Friday the 17th, starting at 21:00, there will be an outdoor charity dinner benefiting the Fons Mallorquí de Solidaritat. The event, which will take place in the parking lot of the ring road, has already sold 1,290 tickets and has over 200 participants registered for the subsequent playback contest.
The organisation has launched a zero waste campaign, meaning single-use utensils and non-recyclable materials will not be allowed. Attendees will need to bring their own reusable plates, cups, and cutlery. This initiative demonstrates that in Algaida, celebration and sustainability can go hand in hand.
On Sunday the 19th, one of the most emotional events: the tribute to those over 80 years old. A recognition of those who have built the village and who, year after year, look forward to this moment with excitement. "It is a gesture that fills us with pride," notes Fullana.
Music, Sports, and Traditions
The programme includes offerings for all tastes. On Saturday the 18th, the photographic exhibition "L’Arxiu Balaguer" will open at Sa Peixateria, featuring images from the collection donated by Jaume Balaguer Mulet. A window into the municipality's past that deserves a visit.
In the sports realm, the chrono-climb to the Puig de Randa (Cura) stands out, included in the 64th Gran Premi d’Algaida Memorial Guillem Ramis on the 21st of July, along with the urban circuit planned for the 26th. There will also be competitions in football, tennis, basketball, paddle, 4x4 volleyball, and chess. For the nostalgic, a revival night featuring hits from the 70s, 80s, 90s, and 2000s promises to be the perfect musical finale.
Traditions also have their space: workshops on llatra weaving and chair lacing, outdoor cinema, and literary presentations complete an offer that leaves no one indifferent.
The Big Weekend: Street Party and Revetler Bus
On Friday the 24th, following the performance of the Cossiers, the grand street party will take place. To facilitate returning home, the Town Hall has set up a special "revetler bus" between Algaida and Pina, which will operate until the early hours of the morning. A very practical measure to ensure no one misses out on dancing.
On Saturday the 25th, Sant Jaume Day, the day will start with the mass sung by the Orfeó de Castellitx and the Cossiers dancing in the square. In the afternoon, the festivities will continue with activities for all audiences. "We invite all Mallorcans to come to Algaida and enjoy our festivities," concludes the mayor.
