The Sagtica Cala Millor project, funded by Next Generation funds, will install 636 new smart meters and unify 915 existing ones to monitor water consumption in real-time in hotels, residences, and public spaces.
The Mallorca Council has launched the Sagtica Cala Millor project, an initiative aimed at optimizing water management in this tourist destination through the digitalization of the monitoring system. The island institution has allocated over 301,000 euros, sourced from European Next Generation funds, to install 636 new smart meters in the municipalities of Sant Llorenç des Cardassar and Son Servera, which will complement the 915 already operational, forming a network of 1,551 measurement points.
The president of the Council, Llorenç Galmés, has stated that this project represents a step towards a more sustainable and efficient tourism model. "Cala Millor is becoming a smarter destination, capable of making data-driven decisions and anticipating problems," he affirmed. Galmés emphasized that digitalization is an essential tool to tackle the challenges of climate change and ensure responsible resource use.
The system includes the installation of measurement stations in wells to monitor flows, sensors, and communication systems that allow for remote data collection on drinking water. All information is integrated into a computer platform that analyzes and visualizes the generated data, facilitating the detection of leaks, anomalous consumption, and the evolution of water resources.
The smart meters will allow for real-time monitoring of water consumption in hotels, residential homes, beach showers and footbaths, garden irrigation systems, sports facilities, and rainfall data. This monitoring will help adjust supply to actual demand, especially during peak season when pressure on water resources is highest.
The Sagtica Cala Millor project is part of the Mallorca Council's strategy to promote sustainability in tourist areas. The initiative not only aims to improve water efficiency but also to raise awareness about the need for responsible consumption. The data collected will enable municipal and tourism managers to make informed decisions to optimize water use.
For residents and visitors of Cala Millor, this system means more precise water management, resulting in a lower likelihood of restrictions in summer and a direct contribution to environmental conservation. "It is a step forward towards tourism that respects natural resources," concluded Galmés.
The Council expects the project to be fully operational in the coming months, once the installation of all equipment and the fine-tuning of the analysis platform are completed. The initiative will serve as a model for other tourist destinations on the island seeking to modernize their water management.
