The municipality raises its sixth special mention for rescue services, the highest award in Spain, and successfully completes an exercise with five simultaneous emergencies.
The Public Beach Rescue Service of Playa de Muro received its sixth special mention yesterday, a recognition that positions it as the most awarded in all of Spain. The event, held as part of the local festivities, was attended by Dr. José Palacios Aguilar, president of the Association for Environmental Education and Consumer Affairs, who participated in the raising of the Blue Flag, the Blue Trail insignia, and the aforementioned mention.
The Municipal Plenary of the Muro Town Hall took the opportunity to pay tribute with public congratulatory diplomas to the institutions and individuals who made this achievement possible. Among those recognised were the association itself, the concessionaire company Marsave Mallorca, the beach rescue team, its head Fran Miguez, and the Beach Safety Coordinator and Deputy Chief Inspector of the Local Police, Toni Carrió.
The mayor of Muro, Miquel Porquer, expressed his satisfaction with the professionalism of the service and encouraged the team to continue in the same vein. The Beach Councillor, Marga Ballester, highlighted the pride in the work done and recalled that three of the six mentions have been achieved during her eight years at the helm of the department.
Fran Miguez, emotional, pointed out that although the tide may erase the traces of the last dynamics, the work done and the lives saved will not be erased. Toni Carrió described the journey that began in 2004 as a passionate adventure, praising the teamwork with entities such as the Balearic Government's Order Service, Marsave, and the awarding association.
The day included a multiple emergency drill in Sector I of the beach, in front of the Operations Centre for Rescue and Safety. The exercise, designed by the Beach Safety Coordination Area, combined five simultaneous incidents to push the reaction capacity of the rescue service, the Local Police, and the cleaning and maintenance brigades to the limit. The evaluation was conducted by lifeguarding experts José Palacios Aguilar and Pedro Caldentey.
The first simulation, which began at 11:35, replicated the fall into the water of a paddleboard user in the boat channel. After the rescue, the victim went into cardiac arrest and the lifeguards began resuscitation, while the municipal ambulance Alfa-Muro continued the assistance and the Local Police cordoned off the area. The jet ski secured the drifting boards and the victim regained vital signs before being transported.
In the second test, an exhausted swimmer 200 meters from the shore was evacuated with the new SEABOB RESCUE watercraft. The third combined the attention to a user with a foot injury from a broken board from the walkway and the activation of the environmental protocol ISO 14001 to repair the installation.
The fourth simulation addressed an oil spill on the sand, which required the intervention of the lifeguards as first responders and the activation of the specialised cleaning company. To the surprise of those present, a fifth unplanned incident was introduced: a Local Police officer suffered a heat stroke due to the high temperatures, further saturating the emergency services.
This new recognition consolidates Playa de Muro as a national and international benchmark in comprehensive management, sustainability, and tourist quality. For locals and visitors, it represents a guarantee of safety in one of the busiest beaches on the island, which has a rescue service prepared to face any eventuality.
