The Ministry of the Sea and Water Cycle has completed the cleaning and maintenance of 6,720 linear metres of streams and ditches in five municipalities of Mallorca: Consell, Pollença, Montuïri, Santanyí and Campos.
The Ministry of the Sea and Water Cycle has carried out maintenance work in seven sections of streams and ditches in Mallorca during June, totalling 6,720 linear metres improved. The actions have been distributed among the municipalities of Consell, Pollença, Montuïri, Santanyí and Campos, with the aim of enhancing natural drainage and reducing the risk of flooding during heavy rains.
Largest Intervention at the Solleric Stream
The most extensive intervention has taken place at the Solleric stream in Consell, where 1,860 metres of channel have been cleaned and cleared. The work has combined manual and mechanical methods to remove reeds, brambles, and plant debris that obstructed the flow of water.
In Pollença, the Can Roig stream has received attention over 1,050 metres, with similar tasks of clearing and removing vegetation. This work is crucial for maintaining drainage capacity in an area that has historically suffered from torrential rain episodes.
Montuïri and Migjorn: Ditches and Streams
In Montuïri, the work has focused on two points: the Ca’n Pelut ditch, with 1,215 metres cleaned manually, and the s’Alcoraia ditch, where 140 metres have been cleared of accumulated vegetation. Both ditches are essential for the drainage of the agricultural area of the municipality.
In the Migjorn region, work has been carried out on the Barres and Vica streams in Santanyí, with interventions on 1,305 and 1,100 metres respectively. Additionally, a section of 50 metres has been improved at the Son Xorc stream in Campos.
A Continuous Conservation Programme
These actions are part of the regular conservation programme promoted by the Directorate General of Water Resources, under the Ministry of the Sea and Water Cycle. The aim is to maintain Mallorca's streams in optimal working conditions, improving drainage capacity and favouring the natural flow of water.
According to sources from the Ministry, this work is essential to minimise the risk of blockages and flooding when episodes of heavy rainfall occur, something increasingly frequent on the island due to climate change. Residents in the affected areas can rest assured: the channels are prepared for the upcoming rainy season.
