The fire, which started in a truck, has been controlled after 6 PM. Firefighters continue to cool the area, and the efforts are expected to last throughout the night.

The fire declared on Monday in Mercapalma, in the Son Banya industrial estate, is now under control. Firefighters have been working since early afternoon to extinguish the flames, which originated in a truck and spread to other vehicles and some sheds in the settlement. After 6 PM, the teams managed to control the fire, but the extinguishing efforts will continue for the next few hours, according to sources from Palma Firefighters.

A Burning Truck Causes Evacuations of Homes

The alert for the incident was received around 3:24 PM on Monday. A truck had caught fire in Mercapalma, and the flames quickly affected nearby vehicles. The dense column of smoke, visible from various points in Palma, forced the confinement of some homes in the area. Residents were advised not to leave their houses unless an evacuation was ordered.

The smoke also caused some residents to hear loud explosions, likely due to the combustion of flammable materials in the area. The fire broke out near the perimeter of Palma airport, although Aena sources confirmed that airport operations were not affected at any time. No flights suffered delays or cancellations due to the incident.

Units from Various Parks and Milana Helicopter Work on Extinguishing

All units of Palma Firefighters were dispatched to the scene, as well as firefighters from Mallorca from the parks of Calvià, Inca, and Llucmajor. The Milana helicopter also intervened, performing water drops to help control the flames. The Local Police of Palma closed the old road from Llucmajor to Son Banya to facilitate the work of emergency services.

The SAMU 061 attended to one person with anxiety and remained in the area in case more affected individuals needed assistance. The Councillor for Citizen Security, Llorenç Bauzà, stated that firefighters continue to carry out cooling tasks to prevent the fire from reigniting, especially due to the large amount of rubbish accumulated in the area, which complicates complete extinguishing.

Impact on Son Banya and Recommendations for Residents

The fire affected some sheds in the Son Banya settlement. Around 8 PM, a wooden beam caught fire, but the flames were quickly extinguished by the teams. Authorities recommend that residents of nearby areas keep their windows closed and follow the instructions of Civil Protection.

For residents of Palma, especially those in the Son Banya neighbourhood and areas close to Mercapalma, the situation means that firefighters will remain present throughout the night and the old road from Llucmajor will remain closed. Cooling efforts are expected to continue until dawn. Residents can check updates through the official channels of the Palma City Council.
