Argentinian actor Joaquín Furriel recounted how he watched the decisive World Cup match in Palma de Mallorca, in a house with Argentinians and Spaniards, and with his girlfriend Marta Campuzano cheering for Spain.
Actor Joaquín Furriel experienced the World Cup final in a peculiar way: from Palma de Mallorca, at his brother's house, with a family divided between Argentina and Spain. In an interview, the performer described the atmosphere during the match, where flags, shirts, and conflicting emotions mixed.
“It was very interesting because my brother was there with a bunch of friends, all Argentinians from different parts of Argentina, and the kids, who are all Spaniards, born here. Some wore the Argentina shirt and others wore the Spain shirt,” Furriel explained on Catalina Dlugi's show on La Once Diez.
His girlfriend, lawyer Marta Campuzano, originally from Santiago de Compostela, left no room for doubt: “She was all the time in the Spain shirt, cheering for Spain.” Before the match, the group agreed to maintain mutual respect, but football, according to the actor, imposes its own logic.
“The folklore and the emotional aspect sometimes lead you to say things you shouldn’t say,” Furriel admitted, who described the experience as “uncomfortable in football terms.” The outcome of the match, with the Spanish team's victory, was not what he had hoped for.
The most tense moment, though narrated with humour, was led by his niece, who is Spanish. “It was difficult for me when my niece started dancing and made some gestures when she celebrated a goal. It provoked me,” he shared. In the final surge of the Albiceleste, Furriel planned a revenge that did not materialise: “I said, ‘please, let it go in now, because if it does, I’ll turn around and dance for her.’”
When asked about the alleged anti-Argentinian campaigns on social media following the defeat, the actor was blunt: he did not perceive any of that outside the screens. “Outside of what might have happened if it had been the other way around, the teasing, what happens with football, I never felt any anti-Argentinian sentiment anywhere in the world,” he stated. He took the opportunity to criticise the distortion generated by social media: “It’s time to start talking about real life, the life that is outside of social media. Otherwise, it seems that reality is in there and it’s a lie.”
The relationship between Furriel and Campuzano became public in October 2025. The actor then confirmed that they had been together for almost a year, with a “relationship straddling” Argentina and Spain. “As long as there’s a direct flight and one can afford it, there’s no complexity,” he explained at the time. Furriel holds Spanish citizenship and part of his family has lived in Palma de Mallorca for years.
On a professional level, the actor plans to close the tour of his play Richard III in Buenos Aires, at the Martín Coronado theatre, between November and December of this year. He recently performed in Barcelona with two sold-out shows and carries a pleasant memory: “It was an honour when we were invited and could be part of their programming, where there are extraordinary companies,” he expressed gratitude.
