One driver investigated for drink driving and another fined for drugs. In total, 54 fines at nine checkpoints between 13 and 19 July.
The Local Police of Palma has released the results of the special surveillance operation against alcohol and drug consumption while driving, conducted between 13 and 19 July 2026. In total, officers intercepted 291 vehicles at nine strategic checkpoints across the city.
The most serious outcome was the initiation of a criminal report for drink driving against a driver who exceeded the permitted limit. Additionally, another driver was administratively fined for testing positive for drugs, and a report was filed for possession of narcotics under the Organic Law on Citizen Security.
The campaign, promoted by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), focused on preventing traffic accidents related to substance use. According to municipal sources, the aim is to raise awareness about the risks of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The 54 fines issued during the week include various types of infractions. The most common was driving with an expired ITV (vehicle inspection), which resulted in 31 fines. Seven irregularities in driving permits or licenses were also detected, and one vehicle was removed for lacking mandatory insurance.
In terms of road safety, officers fined two drivers for not using approved child restraint systems, two passengers for not wearing seatbelts, and one motorist for using a mobile phone while driving. Additionally, two users of Personal Mobility Vehicles (VMP) and one moped driver were fined for not wearing helmets.
Other fines included driving with an exhaust pipe without a silencer, bringing the total number of infractions to 54. The checks were carried out at various points in the Balearic capital, although the City Council has not specified the exact locations to avoid compromising the effectiveness of future operations.
The council highlights that these interventions are part of a permanent strategy to ensure road safety in the urban area. The DGT campaign is repeated periodically, and the Local Police of Palma actively participates in it.
Residents of Palma can expect new checks in the coming weeks, as the Department of Citizen Security has confirmed that it will maintain surveillance at various points in the city. The recommendation for drivers is clear: if you drink or take drugs, do not drive.
The results of this week reflect, according to police sources, the importance of maintaining pressure on drivers who break the rules. Driving with an expired ITV remains the most common infraction, indicating a lack of vehicle maintenance that could have serious consequences in the event of an accident.
