Palma is preparing to experience the Spain-France World Cup semifinal. Fans like Dani, who watched the last Euro on a laptop from Bulgaria, will gather this Tuesday at Son Fusteret to watch the match on a giant screen.
The Plaza de España in Palma was painted red this Monday. Dozens of fans wearing the Spanish National Team jersey began to rev up for the World Cup semifinal that pits Spain against France. Dani, a young man from Palma, could not hide his excitement: "I’m expectant, I trust," he said while sporting the number of Lamine Yamal on his back.
From Bulgaria to Son Fusteret
Dani recalls how he experienced the last Euro. "I watched it in Bulgaria on a laptop. Now I can go to Son Fusteret with my friends and watch it on a giant screen." Along with his friends Juli and another Dani, they plan to attend the Son Fusteret venue, where the Palma City Council has installed a giant screen for fans to watch the match live. The three agree that the match will be "intense," but they trust that Luis de la Fuente's team will make it to the final on Sunday.
Fourteen in the family
Manuel, who was walking hand in hand with his grandson Jesús in the centre of Palma, also has a clear plan. "We will watch it all together as a family. There are fourteen of us. If I were alone, I wouldn’t watch it, I would get nervous," he confessed. Both predict a 2-1 win for Spain, with goals from Lamine Yamal and Merino. For Manuel, this match is special because his grandson is passionate about football, and watching it with family is a tradition they do not intend to break.
From Mallorca to Gijón
Not all fans will watch the match on the island. Angie and Bruno, a couple from Asturias enjoying their last moments in the centre of Palma, planned to travel to Gijón to watch the match in the city's fan zone. "We’re a bit nervous," they admitted. While Bruno bets on a 3-2 win for France, Angie is confident in a Spanish victory of 2-1.
Few jerseys, much enthusiasm
Miguel Ángel, who spent the whole morning at the corner of Oms street with San Miguel, noted that during the day he saw "few national team jerseys." Nevertheless, he remained optimistic: "I think we will win with a goal from Yamal. I’m really enjoying this World Cup. We are starting to play like we did when we won the World Cup." The Spain-France match takes place this Tuesday at 21:00 hours in the stadium of the German city of Munich. In Palma, fans will be able to follow it on the giant screen at Son Fusteret, with free access from 20:00 hours. The Palma metro will extend its service until 1:30 in the morning to facilitate the return home.
