The National Police's Response Operational Group has arrested nearly 120 people for thefts at Playa de Palma, most caught in the act. The officers have recovered and returned the stolen items to their owners.
The National Police has detained around 120 individuals this summer at Playa de Palma for their alleged involvement in thefts, as confirmed by the police force. All arrests have occurred 'in the act' thanks to the work of the Response Operational Group (GOR), which has allowed for the recovery of stolen items in most cases and their return to the rightful owners.
The special operation, which has been deployed due to the large influx of tourists in the area, has included an increase in both uniformed and plainclothes patrols. The police have highlighted international collaboration with Dutch and German officers in mixed patrols, as well as support from Romanian police in investigative tasks.
One of the latest arrests took place in the early hours of Tuesday. GOR officers observed an individual approaching tourists with the intent to steal from them. Upon searching him, they found several wallets containing documentation from German tourists, sunglasses, cash, wireless headphones, and four high-end mobile phones, all belonging to foreign visitors. The detainee, of Algerian nationality, was charged with theft.
The National Police has emphasized that, thanks to the swift intervention, they have been able to identify the legitimate owners of the items and are making arrangements to return them. Most affected tourists have been able to recover their belongings before leaving the island.
The security operation at Playa de Palma will remain active for the remainder of the high season, aiming to ensure the safety of visitors and prevent further incidents. Collaboration with foreign police forces will continue as a key tool to improve tourist assistance and expedite case resolutions.
