The Palma Court has sentenced a 41-year-old man to five and a half years in prison for attempting to murder his ex-partner by hitting her with a metal bar on the head in the street of the Balearic capital. The accused admitted the facts and accepted the sentence, which includes compensation of over 43,800 euros.

The court of the Second Section of the Provincial Court of Palma issued a final ruling yesterday against a man who, in May 2025, attacked his ex-partner from behind with a metal bar while she was walking in the early hours. The victim, aged 36, suffered serious cranial and facial injuries and lost several teeth, according to the established facts.

Acceptance of the agreement and sentence

The defendant, who had been in pre-trial detention for over a year, admitted the facts before the court and accepted the sentence of five and a half years in prison, as well as a prohibition on approaching and communicating with the victim for fifteen and a half years. The prosecution reduced its initial request of fifteen years in prison after considering the mitigating factor of damage repair, as the accused provided 6,500 euros for the victim, assisted by family and friends.

With an agreement reached between the parties, it was not necessary to hold a trial. The court delivered the sentence orally and declared its firmness after confirming that neither party would appeal. The aggressor will remain in prison, now to serve the imposed sentence.

Compensation and aftermath

As civil liability, the convicted man must compensate his ex-partner with 43,800 euros for the severe injuries caused and the aftermath she has suffered. The attack occurred around 6:30 am on May 2, 2025, when the man, intending to end the woman's life, repeatedly struck her on the head with a metal bar in the street of Palma, without her being able to defend herself as she was attacked from behind.

The Palma Court has emphasised the seriousness of the events, which are framed within a context of gender-based violence. The sentence includes the obligation for the aggressor to undergo re-education and psychological treatment programmes during his sentence.

The case has generated shock in the Balearic capital, where the victim continues to recover from the physical and psychological aftermath. The final ruling represents a judicial closure for an assault that could have cost the woman's life.
