The fire declared this Friday in Brazatortas has been brought under control after forcing the confinement of the hamlet of Retamar and closing two roads. This is the fourth major fire in the Alcudia Valley area in July.
The forest fire declared on Friday afternoon in the municipality of Brazatortas (Ciudad Real) was controlled by 11:40 PM, according to sources from the firefighting operation. Early on Saturday, only one ground unit with two personnel remained in the area, so it is practically considered extinguished.
The fire, detected at 5:20 PM by a fixed lookout, prompted the activation of the Es-Alert warning system to confine the residents of the Almodóvar hamlet of Retamar. It was also necessary to close the N-420 and CM-4115 roads, two key routes in the region. Up to 17 units and 68 personnel participated in the firefighting efforts, mobilised by the Castilla-La Mancha firefighting operation.
This is the fourth major fire affecting the Alcudia Valley area so far in July. The first two occurred in Hinojosas de Calatrava and Cabezarrubias del Puerto, causing damage to property and livestock. The third, declared earlier this week in the municipality of Puertollano, ended with a worker seriously injured by burns at a photovoltaic plant.
The authorities are considering various hypotheses regarding the origin of these incidents. In the first two fires, there are indications of "negligence" in agricultural tasks, while the one in Puertollano may have been caused by an incident at one of the nearby photovoltaic plants along the N-420. So far, there is no official information on the causes of the Brazatortas fire.
The recurrence of fires in the same area has generated great concern among residents and landowners. Some residents have expressed to local media their worries about the virulence and frequency of a phenomenon they do not recall experiencing before. Climate change, landscape transformation, and new agricultural and livestock practices are at the centre of the debate.
The President of Castilla-La Mancha, Emiliano García-Page, spoke on Friday about the wave of fires. After urging the public to be "cautious," he stated that a joint reflection will be necessary to determine whether current legal limitations are sufficient to reduce risk. García-Page acknowledged that there are "far more resources than ever" to combat fires, but urged a sense of "humility" because "nature will always teach us lessons."
The regional president also pointed to the need to review regulations governing risky activities in rural areas, such as barbecues in the countryside or fireworks during local celebrations. "Everyone must accept that there cannot be fireworks when there is a risk," he noted, referring to public awareness. However, he avoided directly blaming agriculture or livestock, sectors that, he said, "are the most interested in not burning the fields."
García-Page emphasised that the fight against fires must be approached through continuous improvement, combining technological means and regulatory changes. "The climate today sends stronger, harsher messages than decades ago," he stated, referring to the worsening weather conditions due to climate change.
Meanwhile, residents of the affected hamlets and landowners in the Alcudia Valley remain on alert, waiting for investigations to determine the causes of the latest fire. The return to normality on the closed roads has been occurring throughout the morning, once the firefighting teams declared the fire under control.
The succession of fires in this Manchegan region has highlighted the need to strengthen prevention and coordination among administrations. The firefighting operation, which maintains a minimal presence in Brazatortas on Saturday, will be declared extinguished once it is confirmed that there is no risk of reactivation.
