Runner killed in Capdepera hit-and-run: driver fled and tested positive for alcohol

A man who went out for a run this morning has died after being hit by a car on the road from Capdepera to Cala Mesquida. The driver fled the scene and then returned; he tested positive for alcohol and has been arrested.

The driver of a car, who tested positive for alcohol, has been arrested as the suspected perpetrator of a fatal hit-and-run that occurred this morning on the road from Capdepera to Cala Mesquida. The victim, a man who had gone out for a run, was struck by the vehicle travelling in the opposite direction and was thrown about twenty metres away, becoming hidden in the dense vegetation of the area.

Two hours of searching in the underbrush

Up to ten agents from the Capdepera Local Police and the Traffic Civil Guard participated in the search for the body. Despite the evidence of a brutal impact, the corpse was not visible: it had been buried under such thick underbrush that the agents took more than two hours to locate it, around ten in the morning.

Once found, the Bombers de Mallorca had to intervene with chainsaws to clear a path through the underbrush to extract the body. The operation included several units and the collaboration of emergency personnel.

The driver returned to the scene and was arrested

After the incident, which occurred around seven-thirty in the morning, the driver fled the scene with the vehicle, which had significant damage to the front. Shortly after, the agents found the car parked in a nearby dead-end road. The driver, who had returned to the accident site, was subjected to a breathalyser test which returned a positive result. He was arrested as the suspected responsible for the hit-and-run.

The Civil Guard has taken charge of the proceedings to clarify the exact circumstances of the accident. It is expected that in the coming hours the arrested individual will be brought before a judge.

The incident has shocked the residents of Capdepera, a tourist area where runners often use secondary roads. Authorities remind the importance of respecting speed limits and not driving under the influence of alcohol, especially on roads with dense vegetation that hinders visibility.
